Post by: Dioptre+150 on 23 February 2011, 11:08:44
Hi! Collected Omega Elite 3.0 1999 last night.   After completing 75 mile return journey a"whining"noise has developed, not sure if its engine or gearbox. It increases with engine speed,gear-changes ok.Engine management light was illuminated for a short while, then extinguised and remained off ever since.   HELP!   Thanks.   Rew.

Firstly, do the paperclip test. Good practice on a new car anyway to see if there are any faults lurking ;) :y

The whining noise sounds like it could be the diff... Check the oil ASAP

Additionally, lift the bonnet and see if it is engine related. get someone to increase engine revs while you listen. Might be auxilliary belt tensioner. Top left at front of engine.

The EML light should come on when you start the car and then go off after a short period of time(a few seconds) That is normal. But as LD says doing a paperclip test is good practice.

Oh yeah... Forgot about Aux Tensioner :-[ :-[ :-[

Check that ASAP as a failure can result in major damage

Thanks for that.   Would auxilliary tensioner have been renewed when cambelt last renewed,as a rule?   How much would it be for cambelt/tensioner kit?   Thanks.

I doubt the aux belt tensioner would have been renewed at the same time as cam belt change. The aux belt is a separate belt that drives your auxilliaries alternator, air con and so on. The classic way of testing them is to "slip the belt off" (make a drawing of how it is ruted before doing so) then start up and run for only a short while and see if the noise has gone away. The  bearings can be regreased but a new one is not too much money.

Cambelt, tensioner and new water pump was approx £150 when I did  mine here in Spain. If you are paying a garage might be £350 plus inc fitting. There are good mechanics on here that also do them and specialise in Omegas and know the job. Might be worth finding your nearest one. Finally if you are competent with spanners then you can do it yourself. Buy the OOF DVD. It is excellent.

15mm ring spanner on tensioner (T in pic) turn clockwise to release tension, slip the belt. May have to release A/C pipe bracket to fully remove

Once you have it off, do not run the engine for too long as the water pump is driven by this belt too ;) ;)

Thanks for that.   I will remove and check if that is causing the noise.

I've got a whining noise in mine but it only happens at speeds over 70 mph and when the wife is in the car ::)
