Title: Oil + filter change costs
Post by: o-meg-a on 25 February 2011, 11:08:30
Hi,
I couldn't be bother doing it myself in the rain with no ramps or garage etc,

So took it to local garage where i've had somethings done before on other cars and asked them if they could fit me in for a change.
They said straight away and i asked how much?

Only £25 with my own filter, or £30 if they supplied it.
Seems pretty reasonable to me, if anything, really cheap!

Just wondered about those who don't change their own oil, and how much you pay?
thanks

i might end up doing it myself next time, but while the weather is this crap i will NOT be getting my hands dirty lol.

thanks

Seems OK to me, depending on the quality of oil they put in of course :-?

As above just check the oil there going to use

This is true....
I'm sure it wasnt amazing quality, but it'll do for the 3500 miles until the next one at which point i'll do it myself and pay more for decent oil.
What's the recommended oil for a 112k 2.5td?
I say recommended loosely, what do people think on a personal preference level?
thanks

Previous years on my mfl Omega, as the sump plug was tatered, I used a local garage. they charged 25 euros to suck the oil out via filler nozzle or 30 including filter. Didn't know the quality of oil but for V6's the forum recommends VX own semi 10-40. You acn buy it quite cheaply with trade club card or 15 litres off Ebay. The Opel dealer here told me tyo go to a motor factor as the same oil was cheaper there . Cheap equalled 26 euros!

MOST of the tyre fitting companies will change your oil/filter if you ask.

In the past I've supplied VX 10/40 and the filter and they've changed it for a tenner cash...nudge nudge say no more !

well that is cheap...
I will ask about locally, but seeing how easy it is, i may just buy it and do myself next time as its all fairly simple, bar some manouverabillity skills with the filter element.

cheers for the replies

The TD needs such regular oil changes, I'm not sure the oil quality between brands is much of an issue. Any semi synth around 10W40 will be fine for 3000 miles.

It takes approx 6.5l, and the filters cost between £5-10....

Thats been my experience so far, Halfrauds wanted £8 for the filter and then gave me the wrong one anyway lol. Only one they had listed for that engine mind. But was wrong. They gave me a refund despite the filter being messy from the garage trying to fit it.

Garage charged £5 for the filter and £25 for the oil and labour.
I think that's nice and easy for me.
But if i can buy bulk oil cheap an get filter in internet pre delivered etc, then i could make a saving of a little.

However, for the sake of convenience, i may end up taking it to the same garage and just make sure they use 10w40 semi-syth.
Its negligible for savings really.

On Tradeclub, X25DT engine filter is £5, U25DT filter is £10. 5l can of oil is approx £10 if bought as 4 x 5l

Done an oil filter/airfilter/oil/plugs change yesterday and the bits cost....Plugs (NGK) 21.53, oil 20.89, air filter 13.88 and oil filter (paper) 5.06. :y
We also did a camcover gasket change, the bits cost £75.00 thanks to Andy C :y

What a job....how the hell the engine ran beggars belief. Plugs were totally immersed in oil. Got as much out as possible, but a fair bit dropped in the bores :(
On starting up after, I can only describe the scene as a bloody great white cloud heading across Brackley in the direction of TB's house..Sorrreeee ;D ;D

Halfords only stock the filter for the earlier U25DT engine, and claim that the later X25DT unit doesn't exist! :D

As a cross-reference for your local factors, here's the Fram part no: CH5979ECO

HTH ;)

When your next oil/filter-change is due, I'd be happy to do it here for you 'at cost' (plus maybe a bottle of Newcastle Brown ;D).
Normally need a few days prior notice ;)

There are two different filters quoted by VX for my 99 TD depending on engine number, however, if I buy the one listed for my engine number from VX, it is incorrect, so I now have the part number that I require. Partco also supplied the wrong one against engine number a few years ago before I had a trade car.

Thanks for that offer sethsmate,
I just had it done at local garage cos it was 500 overdue. So not for another 3500 lol.
But by any means, i may well hit you up when that rolls around. I'll store up a few newcastle browns in the mean time :D
