A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
Retarded spark timing
The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings

have you cleared the code once already and it returned straight away? If not clear the code and keep an eye on it.

I get occasional issues with mine - always connected to running fuel low or refilling - mine is a V6 though. Once every 3 or 4 months.

Can you rule out fuel as an issue?

If you have an exhaust leak before the cat (Eg, at the manifold) then this could very well be the cause

ok - suggest refuel, reset code and see how it goes - the older the cat the more prone to this sort of thing.

If you have a Maxscan or similar then just reset rather than moving sensors etc. At an occurrence frequency of 3 times a year it is not really a problem given variations in fuel at petrol stations - in my view at least.
