Title: front tyres wearing on inside?
Post by: o-meg-a on 01 March 2011, 18:27:37
Hi,
Just wondering whether this is something simple like tracking,
Or something more sinister like wishbones?

It's both front tyres wearing on the inside shoulder.

Thanks

Oh,
And I have a slight pull to the left steering wise.

Inner shoulder wear is camber.  The camber may be due to worn suspension, or poor adjustment, or most likely a combination.

Omega is fussy with camber, just settign to 'green' simply isn't good enough.

is it going to cost me silly money to get it sorted, cos i cant be wearing through every set of tyres like this lol
I do tend to buy part worns, but would prefer them to last a bit longer.
Techincally they are legal still as its only the outer shoulder.

so for now i wont worry, i'l start with tracking, see if that cures pull to the left and then have a look at camber settings.

thanks

Honestly, don't waste your money pissing around with tracking. Complete waste of money on 99.99% of Omegas, and your shoulder wear is clearly camber.

Check for suspension wear, then get a full geo check done. Not tracking, not 4 wheel laser alignment tosh. Full geometry check.

TB just beat me to it, your camber IS out! You may buy some time by setting up roughly, see here:- http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1283955011

and that's going to cost me £100's ???
I've not got the money to be throwing at it right now.
Its so annoying when things wear like that....

I take it WIM is the best at this, from what i've seen on here.
I'm not travelling up that far for it though.
I'll ask them where their nearest agent is.

thanks

if i'm going to spend money getting it done,
I might as well chuck these on first and then get them done....

Sorry but I agree with TB, it's a total waste of money to do Tracking / laser four wheel rubbish on an Omega.

Needs to be set up by someone who understands the Omega chassis, there are a few who know, not just WIM. You'll get your money back on the first set of tyres you don't have to buy.

I would also add that in my experience inner shoulder wear is mostly down to worn wishbone bushes, check all the suspension components using the guide on here as reference and replace anything that needs replacing before visiting a proper outfit for Geometry, yes it'll cost you initially but you'll throw good money after bad otherwise.

Also,

What's the consensus on using cheaper wishbones?
I reaaaaaly cant afford to be paying £200 for wishbones from allgermanparts and then having to pay £100 or so to WIM as well....it's just not viable as an option for me.

Including the fact i'm going to have to buy new tyres too....
and the tax is due......

looks like i'd end up paying exactly the same for fixing it as i did just buying the car last fortnight!!!

I would consider doing the work myself, i've read the wishbone changing guide.
So i'd save some money there.

Thoughts please?  :(
thanks

I fit the cheap ones from ebay... Seem to last about 18 months-2 years. Wishbones are a service item IMO, although I might polybush these ones :-/ :-/

I fit cheap ebay jobs and have got just over 20K out of them depends on your mileage i would say ;)

Ah ok,
I have found a pair of ebay ones for £50 delivered, so that seems more reasonable
I could fit those and they enquire about the geometry set up at Discount tyres (cwmbran).
As these are the closest affiliates of WIM.

My mileage is not massive, i drive a couple of hundred miles every weekend for work and the occasional long trip somewhere, scotland etc.

So tbh, i think i'll go with the cheap ones.
Who knows, i might not even have the car still in 2 years lol
I seem to change every 6 months so far..... :-/

Havent found one i want to spend lots of money on yet lol

I've just bought some front lower wishbones, complete with bushes.

Vauxhall were wanting £96 for the bushes only. Unipart, wishbones and bushes came to £76 inc VAT. Just need to get them fitted this weekend.

So, this WIM place? Where is it? And if it's miles away from me, is there anyone in the South Yorkshire / North Derbyshire area who is any good for full geo?

This is basically what my tyres look like right now

I checked my tyre pressures today as well and they were a tad low, so thats not helping things.

I also noted that i can get some cheap part worns at £10 a tyre locally in my size.....Sooooo for now, i can bear with having to change them once in a while for a tenner hear and there until i have enough spare pennies to get this done for good.

Joys of being broke... :(
and self employed.... :-/
and a self employed SINGER no less..... :'(

If those are constructional cords exposed on the inner edge in the top pic then they are nickable by Police, irrespective of the tread depth across the rest of the face...  :'(

They're not, the brown is mud on the top of the sidewall.
No cord
Its all rubber

I know about the tyre wear laws.  ::)

Fair enough  :y

You also mentioned that they loose air.  If the tread depth is that thin then I would tactfully suggest that if you ran a bare hand over the inside edge you would be pricked by the wire cores or view the canvas layers.

The bottom pic certainly shows sidewall rubber meeting treadface....

Post by: o-meg-a on 02 March 2011, 18:37:23
yeah i did run my hands over them and wiped em off,
They are smooth as a babies bum right now
But defo no wire...still some rubber there.

And with regards to them losing air, I said they were low....like 28psi, not 10psi

So not really losing air as such.
It was the back ones that were low actually at 22psi, but they have perfect tread and no punctures.

either way, for now they are legal, but wont be for long.

and btw,
I'm not meaning to sound like a complete D**K, but it seems to come across that way in text.

I'm just showing pictures to show what's happening.
I've had a car in the past which was lowered around 70mm and have major negative camber, so i'm used to tyres wearing on the inside.
I never drive with illegal tyres and i am very vigilant about the wear on them.

I have only recently bought this car, hence the problem just being diagnosed.

thanks for all your input everyone.
its certainly cleared up the things i need to have done in the near future.
Just had a quote from Mototec in Southwales for full geometry at £79.95 +vat and they seem to know what their talking about too. Reckon if castor doesnt need adjusted that can drop to £69.95 +vat.
And also suggested toe adjusters can be seized and will have to allow extra time if they are and may need new ones.
Looking at my rusty as hell wishbones, i wouldn't be in the least bit surprised.

I'm waiting for a quote back from the Local WIM affiliate.

I see, so there is a member price.
Its way to far for me to go there,
But i see on their website that they have agents across the country.
Do you reckon this price is universal to them as well?

£60 to OOF at Chesham only i'm afraid.

Trying really hard not to sound high and mighty or superior. But (about to fail)...

<Rant on>
i see entirely why the news has been changed at the top of the page, to include, Reading the guide and faq sections... And hence why my brouser pages are jumping up and own all over the plaice as it scrolls through.

Absalutely "The" most covered topic on the forum. Guides on this are the longest and most involved of any afaict. All the info is there... GO READ THEM!

<Rant off>

Sorry, appologies, .... Calm calm. Count to 10. Long day, and some muppet drove into the rear of my car on the way home  >:(

Forgive me.  :-X

Is this a rant about me asking about tyre wear?
Or WIM?
either way, just wanted to know if i had options besides the obvious.

Besides the guides,
This is the only forum i've ever been on where the search results are restricted to 15......
Means finding stuff is really hard when looking broad spectrum and long term.
Is it possible to sort that out?

As for the guides, I read them first and then asked the question anyway....
Because, they did not detail personal experiences with cheaper Wishbones (which i asked about), they did not highlight the fact that WIM price is only to them......
Had i not started this thread i would not know these things and there would be another thread with all those questions in anyway.....

So cool your boots...

Thats just me :-?
Appologies once again, i do feal better now though.  ;)

Google? .... No no enough.  ;D

Wim offer a discount to oofers, but only at head office in Chasham as said. They have franchises(?) or afiliates around the country where wim over see the set up results, but top price sadly.

And to add, just to make sure your aware( i think you are but just in case) that if the current settings are left un altered, there is a very goid chance of a blow out as that edge wears further.

Diagnose, replaice, set up, then fit new tyres. Looking at the pics time is not on your side, wishbones are a must surely? If keeping long term, lemforder imo. If the rearward bush is ok, polly may be cheapest for you as they can be fitted with wishbones in place.

If fitting part worn/runners then an experieced eye may be able to set camber and toe to acceptable levels on the drive. Not worth the risk on new rubber though.

Cheaper wishbones....
Avoid at all costs, items from buypartsby, firstline, delphi.

Lazytinker and Kevin Wood have had goid results using chespos, but not sure where they where purchased. Vauxhaul parts warehouse maybe? Or LMF?

But as said, chech the rearward bush condition first, might get away with polly and a spirit level.

Also consider any warranty with wishbones.

Lemforder. 2years i believe.

Others. Lucky to get one year. If any.

IMHO, there's simply one option here .........

My own preference is for Lemforder wishbones with polybushed front bushes.

Then a trip up to WIM for the full business, as there's no-one in this area who will/can do what's needed - simples.
I did this just last week, and it cost me around 55 quid for diesel plus 72 quid for the full set-up there. The car's handles totally different now, and goes where it's told to!
That total's far less than the cost of two decent-quality replacement tyres.

Send me a PM, and I'll give it the 'once over' to ascertain exactly what's needed on your car.
We'll take things from there.

You should be able to get here and back on a gallon of diesel.

Ah that would be ideal sethsmate, cheers

Be good for someone who's seen it before to have a gander.
Weekend or weekdays good for you?
