Title: Hairy Exhaust
Post by: cleggy on 28 February 2011, 09:08:24
Just noticed I have fibres coming out of the exhaust. :o I know this has been answered before, but I can't find the thread. I was wondering where it is coming from so I know which bit to replace, mind you replacing the whole thing might be the best option :(

It will be coming from one of the 3 silencers, more than likely the back box ;)

Cheers Pete, I'll get it up on the ramp at the garage, and check the condition of the whole thing before deciding what to replace, hopefully just the back box :)

I concur with Pete!

I had the same thing on another car.  Fibreglass, coloured in part by exhaust fumes left what looked like a cat hanging out of my backbox.   :-?

Okeh an update.
I was merrily driving up a slight hill, and I heard a loudish POP, on looking in my rear view mirror, a small black cloud was drifting behind me, and the folllowing car was falling further, and further behind. ;D ;D ;D. I guess the cat's tail just got blown out of the exhaust. :D.

I popped the car into my local garage Wollaton Auto Centre, and Ginger the owner rang me to say it's fine for at least a couple of months. The exhaust is blowing slightly at the join to the back box, but nothing to worry about so don't waste your money bring it back when it blows, and I'll sort it then. :y :y
I dropped him off half a dozen large bottles of Peroni this morning, as a thank you. :y

It's a pity there aren't more garages like this.

Be a tad cautious ... had this on the old 2.5 .... I "thought" the pop and the fibres vanishing was the end of it .. but it wasn't .. :(

Next thing I knew was performance was markedly reduced .... car had no guts whatsoever, and I had to kick it down hard going up a hill .... whence there was a humungous "BANG" and a centre box disintegrated ... looked like a shell had gone off !!!

AA recovered, when we dropped the exhaust the back box was virtually completely blocked, very small amount of gas could pass. seems that the internals had collapsed (initial hairy cat) then blocked .. which caused high back pressure .. hence the poor performance as the engine could not "breathe" ... seems the "hoofing it" up the hill  built the pressure up until the centre box decided it could cope no more......

IMHO it's telling you it needs replacing ... sooner rather than later .. :(

Yes, had this exact same experience in my now-departed 2.5 estate - definitely do not leave it, get the offending bits of exhaust replaced, and pronto!  :)

Strangley enough, had the same thing yesterday when towing the pikey palace from storage to the service agent for the start of the new season.

Car was not sounding quite itself and initially thought diff or gearbox but then, thinking clearly, realised that the 'van was a few feet behind the exhaust and would affect the exhaust note.

That thought changed again when I dropped the van and drove home.  Noise still there and car possibly seemed a tad flat.  Parked it up and went off in a huff.

Walked the dog this morning before work and on return, fibreglass hanging out one of the outlet pipes so looks like the back box is collapsing.

That was a complete new VX system approx 18 months ago and now fubar so will be looking for a stainless substitute, just like yourself this weekend....  ;D

Remember, two year warranty on Vx exhausts so dig your receipt out.

Vx zorsts not what they used to be  :'(

Not looking forward to mine going, one of the double walled ones, its soooo silent compared to the crap the sell now  :(

Are there any suppliers for double walled exhausts? I'd pay extra for a decent bit of tin....
