Is there a 'How to' for the above? I thought I'd seen one but now can't. :-/
-
don't think we have one, its just a case of unplugging it and putting new one in. AR25/35 are identical in terms of fitting :y
-
I think sassanch's thrust washer pics will explain a lot
As per your other thread, I've done a few of these, I am more than happy to come down and help for the day :y

Yes, got that bookmarked already. I know there is an issue with the torque converter coming off, with potential damage caused if done incorrectly, either with or without the box, and I can't remember which. :y
Thanks very much for your kind offer James. It will probably be after Easter as I have a building project on at present. :y

You need to unbolt the TC, and remove it WITH the gearbox :y
Leaving it on the engine can damage the seal on the gearbox shaft...

I think last time anyone asked Jimbob said he had taken it down to give it a polish and it would be back soon ::)

That's it, I knew I'd read it somewhere. :y :y :y

Perhaps he's polishing something else, and lost track of time? ::) ::) ::) 8-) 8-) 8-) ;D ;D ;D

Upon refitting... insert the TC into the bellhousing, aligned correctly and as far back as it can go.. (you'll hear it make a scoring noise when it's back far enough)
It can be deceptive - you can think it's in there far enough, when actually it's not - which can cause probs on refitting

This thread http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1279736694/7 mentions Ronald McBurgers guide.

My recollection of the key points is
1. V6 (and I4) petrol engines use GM small block bolt pattern for the bell housing. BMW diseasal uses BMW bolt pattern.
2. Petrol and diesel engines have different torque characteristics therefore the torque converter is chosen to suit the engine.
3. AR35 is stronger than AR25 but has same gear ratios.
4. If the new gearbox came from a petrol engine then the bellhousing and torque converter need to be transfered from the old box to the new gearbox before fitting.
5. The gearbox must be stood on end before the bellhousing is removed or else the oil pump, and very important little things, will jump out and forget where they came from ::)
6. There is a plastic thrust washer in there somewhere that is easy to change while the bellhousing is off.........
7. Assembly is reverse of dissembly BUT as said above fit torque converter to gearbox before fitting to engine.

Thanks Andy, that's the one I've seen, but now cant find. :-/

As JV6 says, TC must come off and go on with the gearbox, and MUST NOT be done using the McBurger method.
TD only has 3 bolts holding TC to flyplate
-
And if you're doing one, and feel the need to take some pics, and write some text for a guide ::) :y

CORRECT!!! :y

Thanks guys, I now have Entwood & JV6 who have
been dragooned volunteered to help, so I'll just take the pics, and SWMBO can make the butties.
Jobs a good'un. ::) ::) ::) 8-) 8-) 8-) :y :y :y

from the sound of it then the ar25 has finally succumbed to the power of the diesel?? :'(

Let's set a date we can all make and have a gearbox changing party.... yay! :D

Don't quite think you managed the 33K that Shackeng has on an AR25 after chipping did you G?
;D

:( almost it did a whole umm around 300 i think? it was a week on the auto, and a3 weeks on the manual before the clutch couldnt handle it anymore!! :o

Fair play!!! Did you manage to smooth the tyres down to slicks in TheBoy style in that time as well? :D

lol good as the omega is i dont dare try booting the chipped td out of the corners cos it would just spin its wheel as soon as the turbo whooshed in!!! the one in spain spins both its wheels with a moderately hard pull away on stinking hot tarmac roads in a straight line!!! must really thihk about getting an lsd methinks!! ::)

No, still going well, but having just upgraded the chip, I am driving Miss Daisy until I change the box. :y

Have you double checked the plate on the side of your box, just on the offchance it may already be an AR35?
Although discussing your previous chip, I reckon it wasn't pushing much power out...

Yes, definitely an AR25. And even the new box also has an AR25 plate, but it is a rebuilt box off a 3.0 or 3.2.
I agree that the new chip gives even more power, hence decision to upgrade box, however, as said earlier, I am not a lead footed driver anyway. :y

I believe Sassanach knew of a supplier of bronze ones...
