Title: Help!! Oil filter canister cap rock solid!!!

HI All,

I'm in the middle of a service and the oil filter canister cap is solid.  I've been trying to shift it for about an hour but with no joy and now the whole canister is turning......  :(

If I keep turning it does it un screw or is something giving way?  I have the pieces to do the spin on conversion, not that bothered if it breaks....

Any advice please!!

Anyone??? I've got to do a 400 mile round trip tomorrow so I'm starting to think that if its just spinning on a bolt, I'll tighten it again, then I'll just put the new oil in for now....

try holding the can with strap wrench or similar then use a longer bar or extending rachet. remember when replacing only needs to be 15nm. hope this helps.

I havn't got anything like a strap wrench  :(

It's still very tight as the canister only moves with a big bar...

Trouble is I've been reading through different threads and I think I might have the wrong spin on filter as it looks alot smaller than the canister.... Don't want it popping off... :o

I've also got a paper filter so ideally I'd like to get the cap off, just need to know if I'm damaging anything when the whole canister is turning? :-/

I'm no expert but I think you do damage something if you turn the canister, you need to keep it still with an oil filter wrench while you turn the cap. Mine was the same and I used a mole-grip type wrench wedged against something to stop it turning

Thanks Jonny,

I've left it as is and put the new oil in, dosn't seem to be leaking and is running OK......

We'll see how she likes the M5 & M4 'cos funnily enough I have to go to The Valleys tomorrow!!!  :y

I'll keep a close eye and my ears peeled for anything outa the ordinary  ;D  :y

I think you did the right thing just changing the oil, for now, but you will need something to hold the cannister still while turning the cap.

Anything sturdy to hold the diameter of the canister, chain wrench, oil filter strap etc.

Ime the car needs to be jacked on stands is high as poss to allow leverage with something like a jack handle or pipe of some sort over the ratchet.

But whatever happens make sure the car is very secure on stands, i nearly pulled the car off the sands altogether doing this job on my old omega. Gulp.  :o

So the old style canister is secured by a hollow bolt in the centre?   Where the stubby threaded pipe goes when I do the conversion?  :-?

I've never done a conversion but assume the threaded pipe goes in instead of the hollow bolt.  :-/ :-/

Yes that's what I assumed as well. :y  Its still very tight and isn't leaking so I think it'll be fine... ::)  I'll have to get hold of a strap wrench before I try again...

or if you've got a ratchet strap that should hold it
