Title: Squealing noise!!!!
Post by: Omega 37 on 23 March 2011, 18:03:49
I have a high pitched metallic squealing noise coming from the front of the car, only when going over 30ish & when car has done about 15 miles. It is intermittent.
Just thought someone might of had the same :(

Not sure if it is the same as I am not really an expert, but my Omega 2.5 started squealing from the aux belt. Initially it was only every so often, but it got worse when accelerating.

As I only owned the car for a few days I didnt know the history of the belt, but within about 2 miles of the belt squealing almost constantly it snapped. Luckily I was only going slowly at the time.

It had turned out the top pulley had seized and eventually snapped the belt. Luckily no other damage, but it could have a lot worse! The local Vauxhall specialist (PRG in Bedford) fixed it quickly for approx £150 inc parts.

This may not be the issue, but it maybe worth getting it checked out.

Probably belt tensioner bearings - remove belt off tensioner wheel and check pully/wheel for roughness - you can remove pulley by undoing centre bolt (15mm IIRC) and then repack bearing with grease or replace as necessary.  Pulley available on its own from Vx - ~£24 on TC.  :y

I think you had your collar felt. It's unusual for the sprung tensioner to fail & you can get the tensioner roller seperately for £20-£30 and it takes minutes to fit.  ;)

I had the cam belt done about 15k ago. the tensioner was changed aswell, bought the kit from gm.
It stops when I tap the brakes. squealing does not increase when I accelerate.
I have a scrubbing noise when I turn & outside edge of my new tyres are wearing out :'(
off to wim monday, done the wishbones, droplinks, steering idler last summer + a trip to wim,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, maybe track rod ends as steering dont feel right :(

Just checked my bill to confirm,  it was not that much. The Roller Tensioner was £60.50+vat, belt was £32.30+ VAT plus labour and a bit of coolant. I also had the Cambelt changed at the same time which was reasonable at £225 (for parts & labour) in addition to the aux belt.

As the car was abandoned at the side of the road and they collected it as well, I dont think it was too bad!

I'm sure this is coming from the suspension/brakes not the engine :-?
