Hi All
I have recently puchased a 2001 MV6 120000 miles fvsh
Just had a £600 service at Vauxhall cammbelt etc etc
Just returned from my first proper trip out the temp gauge runs between 85-90 when running and 92 when stationary then the fan kicks in and puts it back to 90
When I stop the car I can smell burnt oil and them seems to be a lot of heat coming from the drivers side like the heaters on
Any ideas please ? and all feedback greatly appreciated this was a present for my 8 month pregnant wife :(

Stop worrying :y :y :y :y Probably very little to worrry about ;) ;) ;)
Temperatures you quote are pretty normal :y :y
Heat from drivers side when stood by the door is usually the catalytic converter which gets VERY hot on a run .. it has to be hot to work properly - I've set fire to grass when parking up after a decent tow :)
Oily smell .... could simply be oil on exhaust etc from dirty hands during the service .. takes a little while to burn off.
Keep a wary eye on that one though ... known problem is the cam cover gaskets ... which do leak oil if overtightened by monkeys in vauxhall garages. Not a difficult job to change ... after you've done them once and learned the hard way !!!

Your temperature seems to be fine mate.
As for smelling burnt oil have you an oil leak or did you have it fixed at Vauxhall too?
When the fans kick in they blow alot of hot air out underneath the car so I wouldn't be to worried about that..
Just check for the oil leaking :y

Your temperature is quite normal. 85 is perhaps even less then desired, but I am pretty sure there is nothing to worry about. After you stopped the car it is also normal that the cooling system is working for some time, that is why you feel the heat coming.
The burnt oil will be another issue, do you smell it inside the car as well?
It can be a lot of thing, the most nerve-racking is I believ when you have a rocker cover gasket failure, which does happen very frequently to V6 models.
Check for oil leaks, even around spark plugs!

I didnt get the service it was the previous owner, on the MOT before last there is an advisory to a "slight oil leak" so I will keep an eye on the levels
I was just really worried as I wasnt aware the operating temps run up to 90+
You will have to excuse us on the lack of knowledge we used to have a fiesta ST but with 2 children and 1 on the way it got a bit cramped - Oh and it felt like a ladies car ;D
Thanks to all for the quick replys, I will let the wife know all is ok - :) :) :)
If anyone is near Reading I owe you a beer :y

You have a really knowledgeable OOFer near you .. Chris Gixer ... although at present he's changing his screen name like I change my socks ... his teddy left the pram during some fun and games last night ....
Any problems I'm sure he'll be willing to help ... once he's calmed down a bit .. :)
Might appear he's new and knows nothing .. but he's been around a while and recently had a small problem with his post count .... :)
