The clutch is on the pulley of the pump, it could be rusty or seizing. I have a spare a/c pump here in good working order if needed.
-
ok thanks
had a look but cant see the clutch, can I see it from above or do I have to get underneath???????
-
You can see it from above, it's the discs looking part on the front of the pulley looks a bit like a triangle shape. Best way to check it is run the engine turn the air con on and see if the clucth is spinning if not then the air con pump may need replaceing, another way to check if the air con works is when you switch the air con on the rev needle will rise slightly to componsate for the pump switching in.

Be careful with that one. It's often just a feed from the air-con ecu to the engine ecu to tell it to run a bit faster. No dependence on the air-con actually working.

thanks
when ac is on the front triangle bit spins stops when ac is off.
it does not sound like it is running. when it worked I could hear it.
doh do I bang it with a hammer lol
-
It sounds like it's fubard matey
-
Apparently happens quite a lot on Mondeos... you do just give it a tap with a hammer.... but not with the engine running!!!!
-
well gave it a good few smacks with a hammer, but no joy.
had a look at another omega & the front pully does not turn by hand. mine just spins freely by hand. :'(

I went to a Passat a couple of years ago in a multi-storey carpark that wouldn't idle, just stalled with a noise like strangling a parrot. Turning the A/C off 'cured' the problem; turned out the compressor had seized over the winter.
I'm not going to go on about A/C too much at the moment as mine is trying to work, but is barely any cooler than ambient. I'm hoping that a regas will help
