Title: Back end noise
Post by: Paddy Flannery on 22 April 2011, 17:51:54
Folks,

Had my exhaust replaced from the cats back about 6 weeks ago and no problems. Last night, whilst stopped in " drive " at lights began to hear a vibration from the back of the car. Put her in neutral, sound disappeared. My drive is on a downward slope, so I was able to get under the car today. Exhaust is hung securely and is not in contact with the car anywhere it shouldn't be. Noise comes and goes, sounds like a vibration in time with engine. Any ideas please ? I appreciate the difficulty in helping to diagnose what the cause of a noise is over a computer !!

Thanks for reading

I have a problem with back end noise too...

... Oh... The car :-[ :-[ :-[ ;D ;D ;D

On a more serious note, it sounds like the exhaust is either rattling on a heat shield or the body... Get under and have a really good look :y :y

Could be the baffles coming loose in one of the silencers... :-?

An easy check / eliminator would be to look at where the exhaust fits to the metal bracket at the rear of the exhaust. The big round bit at the back of the exhaust could be touching against 2 "rods" that connect to a welded bracket on the car. If the rods and the big round bit are touching then that would be the problem. I had this and went to a local garge who used a propshaft jack to gently prise the bracket up and eliminate the noise. Be careful and do this very slowly as it is likely the bracket will be corrdoded and you don't want it to snap.

Radar, do you mean the very back of the car above the tailpipe end of the back box, or further down towards the front of the car , where the 2 centre pipes join the back box ?

Just in from work and off to bed, so intend to look under car later tonight.

Thanks

Sorry for the late reply - i mean at the end of the back box - if the 2 rods are close to or touching the back box then that will cause a noise. Best of luck

Also !  The rear pipes on aftermarket rear boxes don't come out far enough from under the back bumper...as a result the exhaust gases can verberate badly. Perhaps get some cheapo chrome tail pipe extensions from Wilco/Halfrauds to see how you get on. Worked for me.

Folks,

Thanks for the replies and advice.

The exhaust is only 6 weeks old and I've only done about 100 miles since it was fitted, so I hope to christ the baffles aren't buggered already.

My drive is on a slope and got my big arse under it as far as I dare ! All heat shields at the back end are not in contact or near contact with the exhaust and all are very secure.

The 2 prongs etc at the back of the back box seem fine and the tailpipe is exactly the same as my original VX exhaust as we measured it at my local fitter. He couldn't believe how little I'd paid for it and it was exactly the same size as the original.
If it continues, I hope to have one of the OOF mechanics do my cambelt, so maybe they can diagnose/repair.

Cheers
