Title: Code 0335-crank sensor
Post by: steve404 on 27 April 2011, 09:05:29
Colleagues,

Had an Omega for 10 years , but recently purchased a 2001 2.6 Auto to replace my 12 year old 2.5 manual.

Symptoms are that on three occasions recently went to start the car, engine spins but wont fire, then after either waiting or just keep spinning the engine she fires into life, then runs fine.
Pedal test (only just discovered, old car was paperclip!) shows 0335, which shows crank sensor? 99% sure I had this on my old 2.5 about 8 years ago and just replced the crank sensor leads by cutting the old one top and bottom and leaving it it in situ then just ran the old one down the side of the engine to clear the poor starting problem. No other fault codes showing.

Does this sound like a plan? Can I just do the same with the 2.6, ie new sensor (any idea of supplier?) then just connect the new one top and bottom after running the lead through what little space there is?

Thanks in advance.

Steve.

Pretty sure its the same procedure on the 2.6.
Wouldnt bother cutting the wire to remove the old sensor personally, just leave it dangling, and one day it might just get you home in an emergancy if the replacement fails.
When you put the new one on, route the cable so that it runs behind the brake pipes at the bottom of the inner wing and then up from there to the plug. This will keep it away from the heat of the exhaust, which is the thing that kills them. :y
Anf use genuine VX. Not the cheapest, but you dont want a pattern sensor letting you down on a cold wet night when your on the way to an urgent appointment. ;)

Cheers for the lightning fast response Albs,

So for peace of mind before I buy, and to clarify, I am getting the code 0335 from the pedal test which according to the list is,

P0335 CrankshaftPosition sensor "A" circuit malfunction

So the code definitely means that a new crankshft sensor is the answer to my fault?

And finally...........

New Vauxhall crankshaft sensor ordered, should be here tomorrow, car has now given up the ghost and wont start, the sensor has obviously been breaking down for a while.

Will run the new one around the engine and clip it away from the heat.

Final question, on my 2.6 where is either end of the sensor lead located, think I have found the top one, just right of the front end of the top of the engine? Where exactly is the lower connector, my old 2.5 one I replaced before was somewhere near the oil filter if I recall, any clues please?  :-?

Bottom of sensor located in block by oil filter has a small torx bolt holding it in place

Cheers for the help so far guys, one last question hopefully, reasonably happy of locating the lower connector near the oil filter, thanks Neil, having second thoughts on the position of the connector in the engine bay, Haynes for my pre-facelift stated the connector is right at the back of the engine, but says for later models it is in the front, can anybody confirm its whereabouts on a 2001 2.6? Just so I get the right one when the new one arrives hopefully tomorrow.

Cheers

I don't think there is such thing as a lower connector.
The cable is captive in the sensor, with just the one connector at its end, which connects into the engine loom.  I thought on the V6 it was in some 'orrible inaccessible position, like most other things, at the back of the engine somewhere, highish-up.  :y

Thanks for that, as mentioned happy with the lower fitting which bolts on near to the oil filter using a torx screw, just wanting to know exactly where the plug in connector is in the engine bay, the old 2.5 one was at the rear of the engine high up under the scuttle, just wondering if anybody knows where under the bonnet the new crank sensor plugs in on the 2.6, is it the same at the rear of the engine?

It's virtually the same engine so look in the same place as your 2.5.

Steve its up around where dis pack would be on a 2.5 but try pulling the bottom ans see what move at top add a bi of string to make it longer though. You might nee to remove scuttle te see it better.

Cheers Neil, tried pulling the 'old' lead but it is that tightly fitted the top part wont move, it wasnt this difficult on the old 2.5, my knuckles are bleeding heavily now! Back out again now it has to be there somewhere??

Looks like I have been sent the wrong sensor, the one sent to me is part number 90492006, this has the more rectangular connector whereas it appears I need 90492061, which has the more oval type connector, hence me not finding the connector under my bonnet! :-X

Check your part numbers mate.
Last year's Trade Club book suggests it should be 90540743
2.5 (early models) 90492006 £83.50 £65.12
2.5 (later models) 90492061 £61.50 £47.88
2.6/3.0/3.2 90540743 £55.00 £42.63

Prices may be out of date now.
