Title: Name that pipe?
Post by: Shelby on 30 April 2011, 16:34:12
Can someone tell me what the broken pipe is in this pick?  Manifold etc. has been removed and found this pipe/hose at the rear of the engine bay.

Thanks Pete, I'm assuming it shouldn't be like that?  :-/ If not, where should it go?

It needs replacing or extending up to the top, back of the engine so that the gearbox oil can't escape, but it should be open at the end ;)

Ahh OK, ill see about sorting that out while I have the manifold off then.  Knew it didn't seem right as it looks cut / split on the end rather than a clean finish.

Bit of an update.

Just went to look at checking this pipe a bit further, have discovered that it seems to be the end of a pipe that goes under the car slightly at the back of the engine.  Pulled it out and theres only about 6-8 inches of pipe from the brake (seen in pic) to the end, no resistance when pulled and pipe has no signs on the open end of ever being attached to anything.

Have no idea where this should of been connected, can't see any other broken pipes anywhere, any ideas?  Does the auto transmission breather pipe still apply and should be attached at the rear of the engine and open ended under the car?

Yes mate the breather pipe is open ended from the gearbox...unfortunately the one on the gearbox in my garage is split half way down :(

It should be attached to a barb on the top of the gearbox, towards the rear of the box.

You need to replace it to prevent gearbox fluid from leaking, and also because if water gets in it will wreck the gearbox.

Ill have a look this weekend, cars going in the shop tomorrow to get 3 broken manifold studs removed from the head.  Ill stick a wanted on here and also try and source a pipe.

Any old bit of pipe will do, TBH, as long as the diameter is about right. Bit of fuel line perhaps?

It's best to try and get the open end as high as possible behind the engine, and to angle it downwards to avoid water getting in. :y

Thanks all, got a bit of pipe on the way.

Can someone give me an idea where I should be looking for the nipple on the autobox?  I don't have a Haynes manual at the moment to reference.

Engine is X20XEV with outlet manifold on the right side of the engine bay as you stand infront of the car looking at it.  I noticed they can be mounted differently so thought I would mention it.

Thanks alot for the help and pointers so far.

I assumed it was on the passenger side of the box but it looks to me as though it should connect to the yellow piece at the top drivers side in this picture  :-/
