Title: Oil Fouling crank sensor

Hi Guys,
Thought crank sensor had finally had it today so got to finding out what plug i have then got underneath took sensor out to find it covered in oil again (second time first time about 2 months ago) cleaned the sensor and its hole refitted it and she starts first time everytime again?? Are they meant to be near oil?? If not any ideas whats causing it to be covered?? the filter is bone dry.

I had same problem a couple of months back, paper clip tests showed 19 code, purchased genuine VX part new crank sensor, (£65 with VX partner dioscount),
on removal of old one, I noticed the sensor end at gearbox was coverd in fresh oil (just done a recent 3000 mile filter and oil change). Apparently I did not nip up the filter canister tight enough and oil was being sprayed up onto sensor causing it to malfunction.(gearbox erratic behaviour 2-3rd change up slow and intermittent high revving etc).  I cleaned the old one in situ, re-tightened both filter canister  and also checked torque setting on sump plug and bingo....guess what :-), car running again smoothly again. So now I have a spare brand new crankshaft sensor still to fit at sometime in the future when I have a couple of hours spare.  Hope this might help with diagnosis.

Which bit of the sensor is covered? There's a seal on the sensor that prevents oil escaping from the crank case because the sensor looks at a stator(?) (a ring bit like on the back an abs disc with teeth on it), which is attached to the back of the crank, the crank is oil bathed so hence the seal.

If the internal section of the sensor is oily I'd say that was normal. But if the external section is oily then there's a leek. Either the seal on the sensor or theres oil running down from somewhere.

Not sure why removing oil would fix the sensor? Maybe there where some metal filings present? It's a magnet as I understand it so will attract any worn metal filings floating about. Or maybe just coincidence.
