Title: Car died and more probs
Post by: robg1984 on 25 April 2011, 08:27:54
Hi all im having trouble with my 98 2.5 diesel elite, she was running fine untill this weekend when she started yo become hesitent to chang in to 4th and the final gear(its an auto) and this morning she cut out completely while trying to change up when I was doin 50. She then started again after what seemed like an age to turn over did the same again not long after now she.'ll go abour 10 metrez before cutting out again! Could all this be down to the crank sensor. Sorry about the essay
Cheers
Rob

have you checked for any fault codes stored   :y

crank sensor on those tractors is robust.

Check for fault codes. Some of those TDs can be paperclipped :y

Hmm have seen crank sensor damaged by broken driveplate on the auto!!! check for codes first before we can try to pinpoint the likely cause of engine stopping!!
having said that engine will shut down if a, temp gets to high
b, oil pressure drops below certainlevel, ecu stops it in these situations!

sorry for the late reply was at work.

had my "My Naff Code Reader" on it and there was no fault codes for the engine but fault codes on auto gearbox.

this is the one i managed to record

P0560 - System Voltage Low Input

and also there was another fault code, i believe it was p0750 and the description was something along the lines of engine speed wasnt found.

any advice would be great

cheers rob

This is from another forum in reply to a P0560 error...may be useful, may not...

P0560-System Voltage Malfunction.
Prob Cause-Wiring, poor connection, battery, alternator.
Try cleaning up your battery terminals & use a small amount of petroleum jelly (vas), when re-fitting. You could also check voltage going into battery.
Hope this helps.

A fault with the engine might throw up gearbox fault code you need to do a paper clip test and post result.
Is the engine stalling or hard to start.

I can't be of any help with your problem other than to say the 31 is just because the engine isn't running.  ;) ;) ;)

As Andy says...31 will basically always come up when you paperclip it with the engine off...it means no crank signal received...because its not cranking, cos its not on :y Need to test for messages with engine running really...although if crank sensor had failed completely then it would throw up a permanent 19...but not always

damn i was getting carried away with myself again ::) i do know the gear box threw up a code sayin it was recieving a spped signal from the engine and was helping it was all related.
Im tempted to get a crank sensor just to rule it out with the fact it starts then just stalls/cuts out!

hi chris the engine cuts out after about 20-30 seconds would this be enough to get the code ? am starting to consider burning the car at the min ;D

Start the engine shove the paperclip in...should just about get enough time to get past the three 12 start of sequence codes and onto any other codes

If you have an "My Naff Code Reader" then get the engine code page up ready :y

Right i have a new twist in the saga!!! Ive just got her turned over(it took an age and killed the battery) and ive just got the following codes off the car after clearing it down before hand
31, 84 and 85 now the last 2 are immobiliser codes could this be because the battery ran flat? or a loose wire on injector 4?
sorry to be an absolute pain with this guys :-[
cheers

More likely to be flat battery related...31 should not come up with engine running though...could point to crank sensor issues anyway...

I know its a long shot but would the crank sensor affect the spped signal to the gearbox as with the code on the box mentioning not recieveing a speed signal

Try running it with the MAF disconnected mate - if it runs without stalling its your MAF  ;)

Is there any smoke coming from the exhaust when you start it and also after it has stalled when you try a re-start.

I have a theory that autobox issues and faulty crank sensors are liked, and that the former can be one of the symptoms of the latter failing.

If you have a TC the crank sensor is a little cheaper I think but it's still about 50 notes, but all of what you say does point to that being the problem  :y

ill try that dbug and theres a small puff off whit smoke/steam when i try a restart but thats after its been turning over for a reddiculous amount of time but thats it hoofing it and its took a while to start for the past month or so even though i only changed the glows just after christmas which makes me think its the crank sensor guffer :y

Thats unburnt atomised fuel thats a good start.
Now theres a black plug at the side of the fuel pump make sure this is located properly this is the throttle control plug.
The other thing that might cause this is a faulty glowplug/wiring that might be open to earth :y
Another thing to try is unplug the MAF and try to start it

Thanks everyone for all the help and sorry for the time its took to reply its been a busy week or so and ive only had time to spend an hour or so on the car every other night! As it stands the car is running again if a little on the lumpy side which im hoping that giving it a good boot tomorrow will sort :y After stripping out a fair amount off stuff like glows, wiring, the maf (anythinkg and everything really :-[) it looks like it was an airlock in the fuel system which must have got in when i ran out off diesel the other week  :-[ and its worked its way round. Going to give her a good run tomorrow and see how it goes from there :) Hopefully this is problem sorted and i can go back to tinkering on her and once again thanks for all the help :y
