last night my omega a 2.2 auto developed a ticking sound that increases in speed with the engine took it ti tha garage and he says it is a hydraulic lifter and needs an engine flush and an oil change any thoughts and what would need done if the flush fails

Take the exhaust manifold heat shield off, you'll probably find a crack in the top of the manifold. Depending on how large the crack is, the ticking diminishes as the engine heats up & expansion closes it up. If not this, then a bottle of Wynnes Lifter treatment in the oil will usually fettle a sticking lifter, if not then the affected cam would need to be removed to gain access to the guilty lifter. This would need new cam cover gasket, new cam pulley bolts & new lifter/s. All DIY-able and if not causing you too much stress, could probably wait until the cambelt needs replacing, then much less work involved :y

Plenty of oil changes needed :y
If you can get hold of a VX trade card, 10/40 semi synth is dirt cheap and does a good job :y
Flushing oil will clean the bottom of the engine out but may make things worse at the top ;)
After a couple of changes, stick some Wynes lifter treatment in with fresh oil :y
If still no joy, you may have to take the lifters out and squeze the old oil and crud out of them :y
Give your breathers a good clean out too :y
And like Phil says ............... check the manifold too 8-) 8-)
