Title: AR35 from 3.2 into 2.5
Post by: albitz on 06 May 2011, 20:34:49
A member who has a 2.5 with a knacked autobox is interested in the AR35 from my 3.2.
He was under the impression that he needed a box from a 3.0 rather than a 3.2. My impression is that they are identical ?
Any other info he needs to know to do the swap ? Afaik its just a straight swap. :-/

Thanks Cap,n. Any mods required, or just bolt straight on ?
Does the 2.5 torque converter have to be used, or the 3.2

Keep the 2.5 torque convertor and bolt the box on.

many thanks for the replys guys, makes me feel better about doing the swap, and i thought i would have to keep my tc from the 2.5 as there matched to the engine.

I have made a start on removing the box from the 3.2, but I have thought of something which might present a problem.
The engine is seized, so I wont be able to turn the crank to undo the torque convertor bolts. Will the box just pull away from the convertor anyway ?
Title: Re: AR35 from 3.2 into 2.5
Post by: richdrury on 09 May 2011, 20:51:11
is should, but just keep it as level as possible, i wont need the converter anyway
Title: Re: AR35 from 3.2 into 2.5

will do. Im not bothered about the convertor either, just want to make sure I take the box out properly. :y

Yes, it will come off fine.

But NEVER fit the torque convertor to the flex plate before fitting the box, it must always be fitted to the box first and ensure its fully home.

You may get covered in ATF though when you pull the box without the tc

i have read older posts on replacing the box and got the message about the converter going on with the box and not remaining on the engine, and if the sore back is anything to do with removing the autobox Albs i appologise for making you work so hard ;)

Title: Re: AR35 from 3.2 into 2.5

very much so, loose housing bolts would cause slight movement thus screwing up the main shaft seal :(

I'd be interested in any problems encountered, (perhaps you could do a how to?) as I will be swapping the AR25 on my TD for an AR35 soon. :y

Post by: richdrury on 14 May 2011, 12:21:01
no probs to encounter, gearbox caseings are the same, direct replacement useing the ecu from the 25, only thing you may have to do is if the 35 came from a petrol is to swap the bellhousing from your 25 box and you will have to use the torque converter from your engine as they are matched to the engine power.

Post by: Shackeng on 14 May 2011, 16:59:35
Thanks, yes I knew about the TC. It has to come off with the box I believe, and be fitted to the new box before it is refitted with its new bellhousing. :y :y :y
Title: Re: AR35 from 3.2 into 2.5
Post by: richdrury on 14 May 2011, 20:36:11
yes thats right, and make sure the TC is seated right or you'll have to drop the box again and redo it as i found out this evening >:(
but the box is now in place and secured, just got to fit the rest of the bolts, torque it all up and fill with atf tomorrow then go for a test drive ;)
