A member who has a 2.5 with a knacked autobox is interested in the AR35 from my 3.2.
He was under the impression that he needed a box from a 3.0 rather than a 3.2. My impression is that they are identical ?
Any other info he needs to know to do the swap ? Afaik its just a straight swap. :-/
-
to my knowledge they are the same.
-
and the knackered 2.5 is mine :'(
-
Anyone else want to confirm this ?
-
Well I've got an ar35 in mine if that helps you Albs.
-
Thanks Cap,n. Any mods required, or just bolt straight on ?
Does the 2.5 torque converter have to be used, or the 3.2
-
Keep the 2.5 torque convertor and bolt the box on.
-
Excellent, thankyou Mark. :y
-
We modified Pinky's hairdo with an ATF shower if that's what you mean. ;D
-
couldnt have made it any worse. ::) :D ;D
-
many thanks for the replys guys, makes me feel better about doing the swap, and i thought i would have to keep my tc from the 2.5 as there matched to the engine.
-
just a thought, would i need to swap the autobox ecu or can i use the one for the 2.5 ?

We didn't and it runs ok.
-
thats good thanks

I have made a start on removing the box from the 3.2, but I have thought of something which might present a problem.
The engine is seized, so I wont be able to turn the crank to undo the torque convertor bolts. Will the box just pull away from the convertor anyway ?
-
is should, but just keep it as level as possible, i wont need the converter anyway
-
will do. Im not bothered about the convertor either, just want to make sure I take the box out properly. :y
-
Yes, it will come off fine.
But NEVER fit the torque convertor to the flex plate before fitting the box, it must always be fitted to the box first and ensure its fully home.
-
Thanks. :y will tell the buyer that if he doesnt read it here first. :y

You may get covered in ATF though when you pull the box without the tc
-
Im expecting that. Got covered in oil from head to toe today, just doing an engine oil change. ::) ;D

And another one to do tomorrow :-X :-X ::) ::) :y :y
Don't suppose you've got an Air Filter kicking around?
-
I did earlier, but not now. ::).......I do have a sore back though. :( ::)
-
i have read older posts on replacing the box and got the message about the converter going on with the box and not remaining on the engine, and if the sore back is anything to do with removing the autobox Albs i appologise for making you work so hard ;)

Well, the box came out nicely ( or as nicely as you would expect doing the job single handed ) so thanks for the advice everyone. :y

started on the swap this evening, just the rear brace and 2 bellhousing bolts and its ready to drop, all going well so far :)
-
:y.......keep me informed Rich. :y
-
just got to get some frontpipe to manifold gaskets tomorow morning, heatshield is missing from the side of my box also and most of the bell housing bolts on miy box were loose :o
-
Someone been there before then ?
-
very much so, loose housing bolts would cause slight movement thus screwing up the main shaft seal :(
-
Bodgitt & scarper garage services by the sound of it. ::)
-
i agree, but will be as good as new when im finished ;)

I'd be interested in any problems encountered, (perhaps you could do a how to?) as I will be swapping the AR25 on my TD for an AR35 soon. :y
-
no probs to encounter, gearbox caseings are the same, direct replacement useing the ecu from the 25, only thing you may have to do is if the 35 came from a petrol is to swap the bellhousing from your 25 box and you will have to use the torque converter from your engine as they are matched to the engine power.
-
Thanks, yes I knew about the TC. It has to come off with the box I believe, and be fitted to the new box before it is refitted with its new bellhousing. :y :y :y
-
yes thats right, and make sure the TC is seated right or you'll have to drop the box again and redo it as i found out this evening >:(
but the box is now in place and secured, just got to fit the rest of the bolts, torque it all up and fill with atf tomorrow then go for a test drive ;)
-
Tough luck, I have been warned! :y
-
so was i, but i still managed to get it wrong ::)

thats put the kiss of seath on it then.
i always keep a neutral mind until job is done, that way, if it goes wrong, you can't blame anyone or yourself lol
-
box is all in and torqued up, just got to put exhaust together and try the box out now :)
-
job all done, box filled corectly and running smooth as, and with no leaks at full operating temp :)
must say many many thanks to Albs for supplying the box at a fantastic price, ;D
ps: do you have the exhaust - autobox rubber bungs and bolts as my box never even had the bracket let alone those bolts ;)
-
PM incoming. :y
Glad to hear the box is working well. :y
