Title: Intermittent Stalling ? ?
Post by: DeRangeRC on 09 May 2011, 23:06:50
Hey all,

I have a very intermittent stalling fault on my T reg 2.0 petrol Auto.

It usually happens when the engine is warm and usually when you come to a stop, say in traffic and sometimes when you slow down to turn which can be a little scary when you go to turn across traffic !!

There seems to be no pattern to it ? The other day it did it on and off for an hour in city traffic after a long drive (2.5 hours) then just once in the next few days of varied driving ? !!

Would my best start point be the "paperclip" test ?

Any help or advice would be very helpful  :)

Cheers

Rob

Check out the idle air control valve in the first instance.  Know there is one on the prefacelift v6's, think also one on the 2 litre desmonds...

Have a look at the maintenance guides.  Sure it will be covered in there....   :y

Get the codes read  :y

On a 2.0 could be 0340 - Cam Sensor.

Ok so had another spat today of intemittent stall....  :(

Had driven half hour, stopped twenty minutes, then short trip home through town and it stalled five times in 5 minutes (pretty much every time I slowed past 5 MPH)

Came home printed paperclip test and nothing  :-? put in clip, turned ignition to II but nowt, checked clip tried with it at III, nothing.....

Am I doing something wrong or is the clip test not completely universal ?

Wanted to check codes before I tried to clean the IACV and to rule out Cam Sensor (had cam belt done 2000 miles ago).

Hmmmm an ideas.

Check the small and large breather hoses plus the IACV.  I had the same problem with mine recently (also 2.0l 16v), was going to do it all as per the guide this weekend but forgot to pick up new gaskets for the IACV and throttle body.  Use the link H21 provided for info, thats exactly what I followed.

However, I did take of the small and large breather hoses, small one was quite clogged up with gunk and the large had a fairly good load in it as well.  I just cleaned them out with carb cleaner, then washed them out and let them dry.  To clean, I just bent the pipe in half (so it was U shaped) then effectively filled them up slowly with carb cleaner and let it do its magic.

Also, if you take the small pipe off, check the bit it attaches to on the cam cover.  That hole will probably be a bit clogged up also.  I used a small screw to clean mine, just gently screwed it into the caked on muck, then pulled it out, this brings all the muck out attached to the screw thread.  Make sure the screw is smaller than the hole so you are not actually threading into the sides of the pipe on the cam cover.

It is idling a bit better now.  If it is this, you probably won't get any fault codes, or at least I didn't.

Note: If you are going to do it, and it isn't that big a job in my opinion (I am not a mechanic  :P) make sure you get the IACV and/or throttle body gaskets.  The small hose is a right bitch to get off and back on with them in place.

Forget the fault codes, its a gummed up throttle body, idle control valve and breathers;

Clean them out as per the guides and all will be good again.

The small hole for the small breather in the throttle body will be worse  :y

As MDTM says, this has all the symptoms of a dirty, sticky ICV and Throttle body, neither will thrown fault code...

Yea, I need to do that but without the gaskets I just did a cursory clean of the bits I could get to.  Will probably be taking the throttle body etc all off this weekend to do it properly.

Rob

About £2 for the two gaskets from a Vauxhall Dealer, cheap as chips.

£2 thats a bargain, I might get two !  ;D

Oh and whilst we are on the subject.... would this problem make the temp hunt a bit ?

Drove about 25 mins tonight & hit traffic and the guage kept going up and down, nothing drastic & it didnt stall just going up a couple of marks then back down to around the 90 mark.

Is it linked or is this normal, never noticed it doing it before  :-/

temp sounds normal in traffic

Sitting in traffic mine is similar.  Normal running it sits around 92, will go up to 95 or just over sitting in traffic then back down to 92 (thats with a brand new thermostat from Vx as my old one was stuck open).

Phew..... thats ok then, thought I may have another problem on my hands !!

Did a 110 mile round trip yesterday (motorway & traffic) and no problems at all ? Intermittent problems suck  >:(

Still raining here so no chance of gettin under the bonnet for any length of time..... I miss my garage  :(

Anyhow as soon as the sun comes out will be on it.

cheers  :y
