Title: I want to go faster without drinking more petrol!
Post by: car-nut on 19 May 2011, 02:08:00
I have the 2.2 which is great when cruising and not too bad on acceleration, BUT I WANT TO GO FASTER lol.

I have always fitted induction filters and after market back boxes to my cars, but am ruling out putting an after market back box in my car as it is not that old, I am considering the induction filter, but is there anything else that will help make it faster without spending big money?

Any little mechanical tricks or adjustments etc...?

you need a couple of extra cylinders....

soldering iron should stick em on!  ;D

I found contact adhesive does the trick, no need for a soldering iron?
And i wouldnt advise to play about with aftermarket air filters, as most are oiled and bugger the MAF sensor! :y :y

The factory induction setup is the same as on the 3.2 V6 which has another 80 BHP so it's a long way from being a restriction on the 2.2. Don't waste your money there.

Easiest and cheapest way to go faster, as said, is to swap it for a V6 Omega. You will burn more fuel, though.

The only way to go faster without using more fuel is to buy a lighter car, I'm afraid. :-/

Yes, nothing magic Im afraid.

Make sure its well serviced, including throttle body and breather clean.
fuel filter etc.

Remove any excess weight you dont need.

And maybe a dose of injector / fuel system cleaner.

Air filter not a restriction in the slightest, so leave well alone there.

Have you had your gearbox software checked / updated?

that can improve power delivery.

Is there a fellow OOFer that can check/update the gearbox software in the Bromsgrove area please?   :)

anyone who can do gearbox interrogation with live data should be able to list the ECU type and version,
We can make an educated guess whether or no0t it is updatable with that info.
needs a real tech2 to actually do the update though, such as Brackey, Nottingham, Hampshire or Fife for forum tech2's or try your local VX dealer.

As others said, not a huge amount you can do for extra power without spending big money (in which case, get a V6), and nothing will allow more performance for less petrol on that, short of losing weight.

Sticking an ironing board on the boot certainly won't help matters either ;D

As for fuel cost cutting, LPG may be an answer, but won't do anything for performance.

Not in performance terms, especially on a 4-pot. ;)

I have gone from manual to auto for health reasons, I struggle to drive my Focus diesel estate manual as it causes a lot of pain in my joints changing gears.

I don't think I will buy another manual car now. The Focus has to stay tho as I bought that for my other half to mainly use for work and as a spare towing car!

Doing what?

I will be adding LPG in the future, Boot spoiler, Limo tinted rear windows, Upgraded sideskirts, possibly tint the tail lights, Put my subs and aftermarket I.C.E in the car.

But first I got to change the gearbox oil, clean the selector switch, give the car a major service, and find out exactly what is causing it to tram line. All things I will be posting about in the future. Plus change the rocker gasket as it has started to leak oil from the rocker.

But for now I am going to pop my car into my local kwik fit to tell me if my rear suspension is knackered as I think that is what is causing it!

I want to go faster without drinking more petrol

Well I guess that's the real trick isn't it! Do us a favor. When you find the answer to that one cut us in on your patent and we'll all be trillionares.  :y

Most engines ave some built in compromises, such as emissions, that can be ironed out to give better performance. But always affects economy on petrol engines. Along with enthusiasm levels.

Diesels however....
