....
checked auto box oil
loads came out of filler hole
car is level ......
............ and the engine was running & had been cycled through D & R ::) ::) ::) ::) :y
but it sounds as though you're over due an ATF change if what's in there is brown :y

Was the engine running, gearbox warm, gearbox in neutral, car level ???
Those are the parameters for a CORRECT check of the level.
Even given those parameters it is expected that some oil will leak out as there is a physical change to the ATF as it gets old ... simply put the polymer chains that the ATF is made of get longer as the oil gets old/breaks down. Longer chains take up more room so the oil sort of expands !! If that makes sense. .... :)
Oil is red to start with but changes colour over time/use. Even if you were to drop both sumps you would only change half the ATF .. so it still would not be red after even a short run as the old mixes with the new .. :)

engine was off
car was cold last used yesterday
So an oil and filter change should cure the problem?

You sure about that mate - ATF consists of long polymer chains which break down (shorten) with age and shear. Never heard of polymer chains growing with age.

OK .. perhaps it's t'other way .. :( .. but the net effect is that the ATF expands as it gets old ... do lots of sheared chains take up more room than the original unsheared ons ???
Old oil takes up more space than new oil .... I know that bit is correct !!! :)

An ATF change won't do any harm. ;)

Yep you got it - knew my B Sc Hons in Polymer Technology would come in useful one day ;)

Right my tip. I am going to call it Varches Fix.Lift bonnet and check that every relay and plug is actually seated(fully home) next the battery. There is a big blue plug in particular. My theory. Rough roads and potholes.
Free give it a go, you never know..........................
