Title: Engine management light on
Post by: Boracic on 05 June 2011, 11:17:40
Hi
I just drove about 100 miles on a motorway and everything was fine until I was about 10 miles from home, I noticed the engine management light flashed then stayed on, it still seemed to be pulling fine and didn't seem to be in limp mode, when I pulled off the motorway I noticed it was running lumpy like it was on five cylinders and it was a bit slow away, but seemed better at higher revs.
When I got home I turned it off and started it again and all was well, I took it for a short run and it seems fine, I did a pedal test and it showed two sets of four numbers, the code was 0300 which looks like random misfire and then 0304 which looks like cylinder four misfire, as far as I know it still had the original plugs in and it's done about 85K, is it possible one or more plugs are getting a bit tired? Or could it be something else like a coil pack? I don't normally go near motorways so maybe it won't happen again!
TIA  :y

Yes & yes!  ;)
But if you know that the plugs have been in for that long, the first thing you need to do is change them, they're a couple of quid each, & go from there.  :y
It could also be oil in the plug wells  :-/ you'll be able to look when you plull the coil pack.  :y If so, it'll be the cam cover gaskets which means that your breathers need cleaning too.

Even Vx's 80k service for plugs is too long (they'll all be loose by 50k anyway).

So get new plugs.  If there is oil in plugwells, then camcovers need replacing and breathers need cleaning. Whilst the coilpacks are out, inspect for any cracks, excessive rust forming etc.

Thanks, I'll get the plugs changed, I think the camcovers are OK but I'll check anyway  :y

You'll be able to tell when you remove the coil packs.  ;)
