I have a mini face lift 3ltr elite, when sat in traffic,or going under 30mph after being on a duel carrige way the temp gauge starts to rise over 3/4's of the gauge, so i stopped let it cool down topped up the header tank as she'd lost some water and noticed water had been leaking from round the back of the engine, upon closer inspection saw it was round the hbv, drove it back(about 10 mile 99% duel carrige way), temp was good, let it cool down and checked the header tank and it was quite a bit lower than when i'd topped it up,
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Sounds like it. Needs confirming as it "could" be a split pipe...
Hbv is always favourite for water leaks.

ok just from what i have read on here, there are no mentions of overheating/ high temps, just wanted a second opinion more than anything as it come on sudden

If it losses enough water, regardless wear from it will over heat. Must admit the hbv's I have had fail the level has not dropped as far as you say.
As said, needs further investigation to be sure.

I have... Had a catastrophic HBV failure a couple of years back, in all positions too. Unfortunately I was on my way to a funeral 160 miles from home and running late ::) ::) Most inconvenient ;D ;D
But, to be fair, I had ignored some warning signs :-[ :-[

Just to let you all know, i replaced the hbv( no plasters needed :o 8-) ) and its sorted the problems out so far,i'm keeping my fingers crossed ;). the guide to hbv replacement was very useful well done.
