as you can not buy aftermarket rear exhaust cans for the 2.5 i was thinking of taking off the backbox and extending both exhaust pipes right out the back of the car with a couple of bolt on tail pipes to make it look tidy
anyone ever done this?
or another idea i had was to find two small single back boxes and fit them to each pipe
i am a little scared of the first idea as i think it may be a little loud, has anyone ever started their car without a backbox on it? how loud is it?

The aftermarket rear boxes DO tend to be a bit loud.
I concluded that the pipes don't come out far enough beyond the bumper and the exhaust gases and such reverberates around at the rear. I got some elcheapo chrome tail pipes and the problem just about disappeared. Want some boom though...just not TOO much. :y :y

A little loud? ;D Think the plod may bother you somewhat!

A local mate of mine had a MV6 that had been "modified" by the removal of the rear box and in the main it wasn't too bad soundwise when poodling around town
BUT....a previous OOF member ended up buying it and in his opinion it was way to loud out on the open road and bugged him a great deal.

Back box doesn't actually do a huge amount of quietening (unless it's the original Vx, double walled one) so not a huge difference IMO.
Certainly when mine fell of it wasn't particularly noticeable ::)

In that case what does back box actually do?

As long as you have a silencer in the system somewhere it won't be offensively loud. The reason there are normally 2 or more stages of silencer is to remove the resonances that are set up by the first box.
Without a back box you will get a few resonances that could be wearing on a long motorway drive, IMHO. Try it and see. What have you got to lose but an hour of your time?

so has anyone ever extended the mid section pipes to exit the bumper?

what i am talking about is taking off the back box and extending these pipes...so it wont have a back box at all. and then fitting a couple of these on the end of the pipes to tidy it up a little

That looks (at a glance) like a good quality OE Vx box... Why do you want to bin it?
Anyway... As Kevin says, you may get a drone but, IME, it's not much louder than some of the pattern boxes available ::)
I think I'm going to be going down the Stainless route in the not too distant future

there is no way I could get two of those to fit, it will need one on each pipe

That box looks sound enough, and good quality. I wouldn't do anything until it actually falls apart, as you might wreck it in the process of separating it from the mid sections.

Think he means instead of removing the box ;) ;)

Probably will ruin it in removal, looking at the joint :-/ :-/

I didn't even think of that tbh, good call.
I will still go down to my local exhaust place and ask for a price, and ask if they think they will wreck it or not :D

Talking of loud, my old Capri (modified 3.0e) used to have two custom made straight through pipes with nothing more than a Cherry Bomb Glasspack Muffler at the end, now that was loud!!!

Ahh, well if you entrust the gibbons at a fast-fit outfit the answer will certainly be yes, they'll wreck it. >:(
