Was working now just clicks, so I'm guessing the motors stuck/buggered. Is it correct that the whole parcel shelf along with the rear seat base and sides have to be removed?

Get someone to press the button for you whilst you use gentle "persuasion" to lift itout of its housing.
Mine did the same, I think due to lack of use, but after a few attempts and a few thumps ;), it started working again!
Worth a try before stripping it out.

If Black vipers advice doesn't work then yes you do need to remove the rear parcel shelf. Not as hard as it looks. The tubes that hold the headrests in come out, the button unscrews that holds the armrest up. A few "button" trim securing devices and release the white plastic spring clips along the front and the back of the underside.
You might have a few(3 ) 10 mill nuts to unscrew underneath too depending on Bose or no bose.
The shelf can be eased past the rear pillar trims using a plastic scraper e.g. tile grout tool. I found it helped having someone in the boot gently forcing the shelf up while I pulled it towards the front of the car.
