I know this is what is recommended, but would anyone advise against 5w/30 fully?

Less frequent changes iirc, both are fine afaik.

I like to change oil x2 a year, but just wondered if 5w/30 was to thin for that engine? It's what was recommended in my vectra with a Z20NET and the're based on the 2.2 so they're not exactly cutting edge. It got very decent fuel economy.

Either is fine. The newer Dexos 2 is more expensive, but still cheap on trade club. Something like 50 odd quid for 20 litres. It's a good oil. Must be, BMW charge £180 for the exact same stuff. ;D
Should last a while too. :y

I still have 2x5ltr cans in shed. So I'm guna run with that and see if I get better consumption

Me too!
My current car has had Mobil1 in it since about 15 / 20k and is now on 95k.
Does not use a drop.
Turns over SO much quicker at startup.
Everybody in my family puts mobil1 0w40 in their cars from about 15/20k (when the engine has bedded in on factory grade stuff) and has done for the last 15 years or so.
My old saab turbo would turn anthing else to char within a thousand or two but M1 lasted the full 6 month oil changes!
Wouldnt use anythign else - currently 20% off at Halfords at present.
The downside possibly to using this is if your existing engine has high miles and always used a thicker oil - thin oil may expose little leaks or make the engine sound rattly as the tollerences inside have settled with the thicker oil.
Worth a punt for one change though, but I would still recon to change yearly regardless.

Mine had only ever had 10w/40 Magnatec upto 150k. Used 5w/30 at 160k and the engine wsas alot more rattly for it, also used 1.5 litres before 170k, (it had never needed a top up before).
Went back to VX 10w/40 at 170k, with some lifter treatment, noticably quieter when it runs properly. Now at 177k, and not needed topping up yet... :y

Thanks for the replies. It's under 100k so I'm guna give 5w/30 a whirl
