Hi
I've always thought the steering on my facelift 3.0 MV6 was heavier than my previous 2.2dti. I just put it down the them being different models.
But over the past few weeks sometimes the steering on the MV6 is nice and light - park up and start again and it will be heavier. It's not mega heavy but there is quite a noticeable difference.
Any ideas as to what could cause this?

Lack of oil, belt to slack or the pump is failing :y
-
Pas pump or servo tronic relay.
If at low revs, pas pump.
If random, ST relay. Least common.
-
It's definitely random. Revs don't make a difference.
If it was the relay would it cause the pas be either off or on or behave as it is - light and a bit heavier than it should be.
What does this relay do?

V6 Omegas have speed variable assistance to the steering. The relay (in a round about way) regulates the assistance. :y

Ime st relay failed to no assistance. Or at least much stiffer than it should be. It would be fine driving, then go stiff. Pull over re start and sometimes it would be fine, others not.
Tech2 can diagnose. Or just stick a used one in.
-
Not sure on the relays roll tbh.
Servo tronic assistance has 3(?) settings, of which it's accepted the stiffest, or least assistance is best.
Presumably the relay is responsible for the various settings? :-/ Someone will know....
-
Cheers guys - make sense now after a bit of google searching.
-
I have three full sets of relays from all of the three 'eras' of the Omega...

Is it? ::) ::) ::)
I want my assistance to be full on at parking speeds. ;) ;)

It normally is at parking speeds, but the car is a whole lot nicer to drive with much more feedback with minimum assistance when not parking IMHO. You should try it some time. :y

Andy b wants a girly button not knowing he already has one built in. Oh dear. ;D ;)
"Servo tronic speed sensitive power steering" I thought....? Adjusts the... well, it does what it says, no ?
Mines actually set to next stiffest/middle of the 3 settings. Seems randomly but very mildly stiffer otherwise. Mostly while turning left into my road... Odd. :-/

I've had servotronic assisted since before my Omega ........ don't forget that the Senator had it too ;) ;). I just don't see the point inless assistance in a ton & 3 quarter car that does,t really corner.
-
hmmm i thought that the servotronic had 3 settings which can be set by tech2, also if you actually take the relay out you would be left with no assistance or the lowest assistance that could be set by tech2-----------might be wrong though usual am :-/

Er, tend to agree to an extent.(O-Oh ;D ) However initially there was a slight tendency to weave on motorways on mine on middle setting. Although that's gone now, or I've got used to it :-/. So I would guess max assistance would be rather unpleasant...? So opposite of that would feel better I guess. A taste thing maybe? :-/

My first car with power steering was a Carlton. No fancy speed relative assistance on that. The first time got to motorway speeds in it, my knuckle were white on the wheel trying to keep it in a straight line ................. till I got used to it. ;D ;D ;D ;D

We much prefer the min assistance setting, still light to steer....but all feels more 'positive'
-
There are actually 6 settings in tech2 for it
3 for prefacelift relay
3 for facelift relay
Ive had mine on a variety of settings over the last few months to test the feel.....Definately feels best to me on the minimum setting.
Why not have a play next time your at a meet - setting can be checked, then adjusted either way and you can go off for a drive and see what you like best.
