Post by: jordan681 on 28 June 2011, 21:33:08
My baby has started to develop car cancer 'rust' in the usual places..  bottom corner of the rear doors..  and the rear arches...

Nigh on impossible for even a well tooled-up and capable DIY'er to eradicate rust for a significant period of time and achieve a subsequent good paint finish, so unless you or any of your friends are professional body-shoppers, its a job for the pros (and swallow hard for the cost  ::))

You obviously love your car, but now is really the 'acid test' - any strong money spent on the cosmetic appearance of almost any Omega is going to be 'dead' money - you'll never get it back when / if you sell it, so - what's it to be?
D'ya love it enough to keep it tip-top (almost) regardless of cost?

Its the exact same conundrum I'm wrestling with - mine is very solid, there is no rust visible anywhere, and is in pretty good shape paint wise. It does however have minor scuffs and dings, and they irritate me. There's no point in my aiming for concours condition, because it's a used every day car kept overnight on the street, but I DO want it to be better than it is - because it has pearlescent paint, it won't be easy to 'match' it if taken on piecemeal, but a full respray will be way more than the car is 'worth'.

Thing is tho - I absolutely love the thing! (and I'm (very probably) gonna spend the silly money!)  :)

You can buy 2 mint rear doors from me for £25 each if you want. Totally rust free off a 2003 car.  :y

I have been taught a tric by pro's for prolonging the life of rear wheel arches on all cars.

Use silicone sealant a smooth it into the inside lip of the arches, but if the rust has already got in there, you will need to buy Q-Rust or an equivalent product which you paint onto the rust, it eats the rust and then goes black, then you can paint over it. I would paint a little hammerite inside the lip of the arches after !-Rust treatment if the rust has gone through.

As for the bottom of the doors in my opinion you would be better of just replacing the doors if it is severe or if it is just starting, Q-Rust it and t-cut around it to clean the area up and keep washing and waxing the car.

Hope this helps.

If someone can point me in the right direction for 2 rear doors..  the problem I have bee facing its getting the right colour..  my omega is that funny 'gold' colour, and I struggle to finds colour matched parts for it...

Tonyyeb..   am all about cost, but when it comes to my car.. nothing is out of the question... To me my omega is my dream car..  I mean who can argue with an Full Irmscher Kitted 3.0 MV6 with a manual gearbox..  I have recently replaced the clutch for the 2nd time since i've owned the car (see pics of my old(ish) clutch on this link http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1308684423/new and am in thepricess of aquiring a set of 19in alloys for it...

I dream of having my car with some very obvious and also some very subtle differences to other omegas...

The cost of having the doors repainted to match your car wouldn't be that much, and you could get the arches done at the same time! Would certainly cost much less than a set of 19" wheels and tyres!! I guess it depends where your priorities lie but personally, I wouldn't be spending money on big alloys, knowing that my car was rusting away...  :y

the wheels are only costing me £150, the only things I need are spigot rings, which are £13.50 and 2 new front tyres at £120 for the pair...  so or less than £400 I have got a set of 19s for my baby... but I might be able to strech to getting some doors resprayed.. I have to spak to my mate...  lol

Here's a better trick .
Waxoyl diluted with white spirit into a plunger oil can , peel the sound deadening back from the wheel arch area and squirt the fluid down into the void between the outer wing and the wheel tub .Ensure it runs to the front of the arch as well.
The fluid will run down and into the join and spread especially if the weather is hot . I do it twice a year at least .
Do the inner doors too although try and keep the fluid off the neoprene door seals.
Clean the inner arch tub and lip and paint with black smoothrite this helps the wet muck run off .
Also , each and every time you wash the car CLEAN the inner lip of muck and debris , it's not difficult and it's that muck that causes the rust .
The other areas I've mentioned before is the window rubbers and estate rear wash/wipe. Take the same oil can and using a soft plastic knife lift the rubber from the door .As you move the knife along follow it with the oil can gently squirting the fluid into the gap.The fluid will  creep in towards the clips that scrape the paint and cause the rusting. Squirt the fluid down into the area between the wiper spindle and the plastic cover keep squirting until it runs out below. The good thing about waxoyl is that it will slow down the onset of existing rust if it covers the area affected but it must be redone regularily.
Remember , if you can see rust that has come to the surface from below then don't mess about wasting time and money  it has to be cut out entirely and new metal let in .

I have a similar problem . Bit of rust on one rear arch and a rust bubble just showing through the top of the windscreen surround. Other wise its a sound car, everything works as it should.

As its reached 171k miles now I think its done well and I dont see any point in throwing money at the rust so It will be going on ebay in a couple of months.

call paul at autoclinic lincoln, just had bottom of both rear doors and one arch done and a patch under rear quaterlight, including a bit of welding on rear door all for £120 and the work is first class and a great colour match (mine is oyster). 07903 523099.
