I normally drive my mig nice and steady but decided to wipe the dust off the sport button to give the engine a bit of a blast.
A few times the autobox changed gear at the 6500ish mark. Changes were smooth and i forget its quite a brisk car.
As i never take it much past 4000rpm normally is it safe on an old car for it to reach those sort of revs?
Do Police specs have a higher rev limit?

I hope its safe & normal, as I tend to give mine a boot weekly to clear the cobwebs out......and make me smile ;D ;D

Providing its up to temp and its not done daily I would say its fine - ;)
Thats what the red lines there for :)

My 176k 3.0 v6 tends to live around the redline ::)
Always let it fully warm up (at least 5m), and cool down before stopping before abusing it like that though.

As TB says, give it some respect when cold and before switching off, other than that it's fine. My saloon (on 175k) also lived around the red line for the same reasons and the estate seems to spend a fair amount of time there because I can't help myself :-X ::) :D

There is a school of thought that the occassional "run to the red" is actualy beneficial .. providing, as said that the engine is fully warm before hand, and allowed to cool correctly thereafter.
The benefits are "supposed" to include ...
"cleaning" the cylinder head/plugs by increasing the flow rate/temperature. (debateable)
"cleaning" the breather system by increased flow rate. (possible)
"removing" mayo from the oil system by increased temperature. (probable)
"exercising" multirams fully so preventing "sticking" (possible)
"exercising" the oil pressure relief valve so preventing it sticking when actualy required (probable)
"cleaning" the oilways by increased flow/pressure so improving flow at lower rpms (probable)
"cleaning" the waterways in a similar manner as higher rpms cause higher flow from the waterpump (probable)
"cleaning" the cats/exhaust by higher temperatures/flowrates (possible)
"increasing" the feeling of wellbeing of the driver, by causing "fun", thus reducing stress and prolonging life. (certain)

I think mine will be getting all of the above bar the bottom one tomorrow, as I've got a 100' trailer mounted radio tower to shift up onto the downs in Kent. ;D

IMO its best not to use the last 700 rpm of the rev range.
But if the engine is warmed through and the oil is nice and fresh, it will do the engine good to have a good blast now and again :y
On my V6, the best of the power is between 4500 and 5500 ish with the ocasional blast upto 6000 rpm when playing :-X
Took it for a run from Hull down too Skegness over the weekend.
75 ish miles each way.
Took it easy ish going there and gave it a good thrash on the way back ;) ;)
About 2 hours there
One hour 17 minutes back
Most of it twisty A roads ;D ;D
Just make sure you ease off the gas for a few miles at the end of your run to give the engine time to cool off a little :y

mines got 96k and sees the limiter brave and ofter. so much fun with an lsd.
once a month i go to an event and then she gets quite abit of revs. must post up a video if i can find it
