Powersounder going off on it's own. Bonnet sensor has been disconnected for weeks no car horn and no hazards so it's the powersounder for sure, but it gave me no warnings !
Anyway ! to the point...........Following the guide I have got the retaining nut off the wiper arm, but it won't budge.
Is there anything else that I need to remove to get the wiper arm off, or is it just proving difficult to remove ?
Thanks for reading. Strange, since I started to work on the car about 20 mins ago it hasn't gone off. Silence.
-
Nothing else to come off. Try bending it on its spring, upward away from the screen and then give it a wiggle and a tug. :y
-
As said ^^^^^ Keep rocking it up and down and it will gradually come loose. :y

There is a puller specifically for the job, be careful though of the cheap pullers. they're cheap cos they're cheaply made. ::)

But as Albs says (and YZ250 ;)), try levering the arm by the longer bit, it will come off. :y

The splines on the wiper shaft press into the aluminium of the arm when the nut tightens. That's all that holding it. A press fit, if you like.
To remove you need to break that fit on the shaft. Press or thump firmly down on the arm just inboard of the hinge until it wobbles a bit. Then push pull until it's loose. Hold it square to the shaft and lift it free.
Once the nut is off, no further tools are required. Just wiggle it basically.

I've not had to an Omega one off yet, but every other car I've done it's been easier to bend the arm at the pivot and wiggle it loose. That way you're not fighting the spring that's designed to hold the blade against the spring.
Oh, and ensure you leave the blade on the arm whenever you're fiddling about with it; the springs are strong and the bare metal end of the arm smashing against the windscreen is NOT good. Especially on an old car with a toughened screen. You can ask me how I know that, but I'll deny everything. And the pictures are faked.
-
Sure can be a bugger though....very nearly smashed the windscreen the first time I got mine off. Use a small piece of wood for a bit of leverage now.

Cheers for the help gents. Got the arm off and got access to the powersounder.
30 mins or more had elapsed and it's silent. Decided to leave it be for tonight.
From reading other posts, I was under the impression that the powersounder began making beeps after a drive to tell you the batteries were dying ........... ? However the lack of road horn sounding and lack of 4 way hazards, I supsect I may hear it again soon !
Anyway, silence for the moment. Thanks again for the prompt replies.

a bit late now, but for the record:
when I removed mine, I unscrewed the nut till about half the threads showed, then gave it a sharp tap with a no.2 adjustment tool [1]
this broke the "seal" and loosened the arm enough so it came off quite easily.
make sure to leave the nut on the end to avoid damaging the thread tho.

Anyway, silence for the moment
Hopefully it won't be silently smouldering away... :-X

Pour boiling water over it with the nut off then a sharp pull turn and it will slide off. Do not overtighten when you put it back though.
Works every time for me...... :y

Don't know about why you say there is no hazards flashing or horn sounding because the poiwer sounder has nothing to do with them. All the power sounder does is to supply an emergency backup alarm with its own built in power supply in case some thief decides to disconnect the main battery.
For there to no hazards or horn sounding points to either alarm control unit behind the drivers footwell right side panel or possibly a fuse.
The alarm horn next to the power sounder unit is also known to seize and become silent but that would not affect the hazards flashing, although they do so on alarm activation only for 30 seconds.
Need more information to help any further........ ;)

Unplug and remove the ps ASAP. They are known to catch fire, rarely, and yours is faulty.

i know that feeling and as you said...i know nothing about that big long crack ::)

Locked the car last night via front and rear pass door manual method. Silent night.
Unlocked car today. Worked at front of house all day beside car. Silent.
I'm more than willing to bow to experience and I fully appreciate the fire risk, but I expected it to bleep if faulty.
Loathed to pay £60 if this was a one off, but loathed to see it burn too !
Anybody with powersounder experiences that had this one off powersounder only activation ? ( not the 4 beeps during or after a drive, the full monty activation but no hazards etc )
Will bite the bullet tomorrow by setting the alarm and staying with it.
Why do I love my Omega so much when it is one fault after another ? PITA.
-
The 4 beeps can only occur IF the PS has enough power left in its batteries.
If the batteries are failing (common occurence) and not holding charge the beeps won't happen .. BUT the batteries will still contain the acid gel that now eats through the skin then shorts out the terminals.
The main battery (80+ amphour) will then try and "charge" the shorted terminals. 80 amphour discharge over 60 minutes .... equals about 80 amps .. watts = volts x amps so 960 watts ... This causes heat (enough to boil a kettle ??) followed by fire.
If you are lucky the unfused wire might just fail instead .... but it might not .... your choice.
When mine failed it only gave the beeps for 3 days (tue, wed, thur) before going very quiet. It was changed that weekend.

About removing the wipers: The combination of these 2 tips makes it an easy job for me: Andy B:"There is a puller specifically for the job" and Nick W: "it's been easier to bend the arm at the pivot and wiggle it loose. That way you're not fighting the spring that's designed to hold the blade against the spring." And make sure you keep the puller carefully centred on the bolt.
Also, if you just want to disconnect the power sounder, you can remove only one wiper blade and carefully hold back the plastic scuttle to do it. But if you want to take it out, it's easier to remove both wiper blades and get the scuttle out of the way. You might want to use some tape on the windscreen to mark the position of the wipers to so you can get them back in the right place afterwards.
