Title: More help needed. Steering fault (i think)
Post by: Adies08 on 11 July 2011, 10:37:24
Hi all. I jacked the miggy up yesterday and if I grab hold of the wheel on full lock I can move it in and out about 2 inches without the steering wheel moving. I take it this is not normal and I'm thinking it needs new tie rods or could it be something else causing the problem. Thanks in advance

A fault. Get under and trace the play while wiggling ( the wheel obviously  ;D )

The only play i can see is the top suspension mount going round as i wiggle it Could it be the anti roll bar bushes as the anti roll bar seems to move as well ?

Passenger side?  Steering Idler.  But 2 inches is massive............................ My Missus would say otherwise!  ;D

For that much play, I can only think there is a problem with the Steering Box.  I shouldn't have thought even the most breaked drop-links/ARB bushes would cause even half that amount of movement..... I am often corrected though!  ;D

Drop links and roll bar may or may not have play, I doubt it, but will have no affect on that at all.

Look specifically at track rod ball joints and wishbone bushes from underneath. While on stands for safety of course.  ;)

Ps, if no play while straight ahead, repeat the test engine running.

Right I jacked it up yesterday and there is slight play when the wheels are pointing straight ahead. The play becomes more exaggerated the more you turn the steering  :-/
