Title: Running without crank sensor?
Post by: SalahJ on 15 July 2011, 11:51:31
Hi...I reckon my miggy's crank sensor packed up as it takes really long cranks to start. It's been happening for last few days, irregularly though. Sometimes it wont even start for few hours.

It just happened to work today and a work mate suggested to disconnect the CPS completely. What he said is if I disconnect it the car will run on "default" program but will burn a bit more fuel.

Is it a sensible suggestion? As I need to drive it for few hundred miles tomorrow and I really don't wanna get stranded. How difficult or easy it is to disconnect it?

Thanks from your suggestion.

Easy enough to disconnect, butyou car won't run at all. Some sensors your car can live/limp without & use the 'default' engine programme, but as the crank shaft sensor tells the ECU where the crank is in its rotation to fire injectors & spark plugs your car has no chance whatsoever of running without it.  ;)

should add, when replacing, only use a genuine one from vauxhall.

pattern can be very intermittant.

and one last thing.....

Have you actually confirmed its the crank sensor?

If not, do the pedal trick as detailed in the code reading guide (see my sig below) and post up the codes it gives you  :y

About 20 mins to fit it yourself.........1 bolt securing it just by oil filter and unplug from under the windscreen scuttle passenger side.

No big deal and save youself £40.

The work mate got a code reader on him and he read it for me. 2 codes - 500 and 335.

500 is not a common code - speed sensor
but the 335 is your crank sensor

No other errors or any error lights in the dash. When it starts it runs perfectly.
