Title: Petrol smell from tank
Post by: Impact Pete on 13 May 2011, 15:13:36
Becomes a bit tiresome everytime you fix a problem one springs up :(
I want some advice on where to start with a possible fuel leak, nothing is dripping while stationary anyway!, There is signs of fuel staining coming from the top down the rear of the tank. In the last 3 months there has never been much more than 20litres of fuel in the tank.
Any ideas where to start with this

On the diesel fuel tank there is an access panel into the fuel tank...  If it has been removed and not replaced correctly then fuel does leak very slightly from the tank, which results in a wet tank with the diesel...

Assuming this is the case, it could be the causing the smell that you have...

this is a good place to start
remove panel for access to fuel pump (in boot)and check for leaking seal etc the other place it could be leaking is filler pipe  :y
what you dont want is a seam gone on the tank itself  :(

It's a seam I'm worried about but as it does seem to be coming from above there is hope that it is accessable from the top, I had forgotten about the access point, I had noticed it when I replaced rear shocks

A seam on a plastic tank?

Check the metal plate with the fuel pipes on for corrosion, easy to view once the inspection cover in the boot has been removed.

No one had mentioned it was plastic, I guess looks are deceiving!

Had alook at this and there is no sign of any leak up top, there is a dust layer that I would of expected to have signs of staining.
Been monitoring it for awhile now I cannot see any leaks, left it running and have no drips, after a run there is a small smell around,
Back of tank has slight marks from underneath of where spare tyre compartment is.
No smells inside car
Lost as to know what the next check is as normally I would expect drips or something like that.

thought I would update, it was the fuel filter, no specific leak, but smell was very strong around it.

could it be every once in a while it has a lil drip, hence the strong smell.
