Title: Broken stud....
Post by: HockeyDave55 on 16 July 2011, 11:34:11
Hi,
While taking my exhaust off to get the gearbox out, I broke a stud on the NS exhaust manifold  :-[.
Am I going to have to take it off the engine or is it do-able on the car?

Assume you are refering to the tud that holds the exhaust downpipe to the manifold ?

If you have now got the exhaust out the way and can see the open end of the manifold is there stud still visible. If so it would be worth trying a "Irwin stud extractor socket" they grip the broken stud with rollers and with any luck should get it out.

If no stud is visible and you are able to get a drill with a colbat bit and get a hole into it could then try an stud extractor by using the reverse thread on it.

If you have the resources some heat on it will help alot as will expand the metal.

Ok, the rain stopped so I went out to get the clutch off.
While I was under there, I had a look at the stud and there's about 10mm on there. I plastered it with WD40 but it looks more rusty than a rusty thing...... Oh boy!
I don't have anything that'll get much heat into it.
I work at Nissan tech centre so I'll have a chat with the guys in engines on Monday......
BTW, when I got the clutch out, the straps on the pressure plate were all broken!! Never seen that before???

You stand a much better chance with PlusGas, IMHO.

This is the point where opinion is actually fact!  ;D

PlusGas is infinitely better than WD40 for 'hardcore' jobs.

WD40 is good for the more domestic applications.  :y

Totally agree again, used Plusgas for years and it works 99% of the time. WD40 used for those squeaky bits and door locks ;)
