Facelift car? It opens from the switch on the dash or from the button on the fob AFAIK.  ;)

Confirmed - if it's a facelift there is no external way to open the boot except the key fob.  From inside the car, the button by the radio has to be held in for a few seconds.

Should be a small lever at the back of the handle which pushes down on the mech to release it

there looks to be a small silver lever that moves with the handle but it wont push down on the mchanism to release it seems as if there is too much movement with it is if its got a part missing

is the lock horizontal or vertical?
horizontal = locked & stays locked when the the rest of the central locking operates
vertical = boot locks & unlocks with the rest of the car.

Never had an estate, but can't see why it'd be different.
Why?  ::)

Edit. Just checked with swmbo and the above would fit with some problems which have been as a result of not understanding the differing positions..ah well, you learn something every day.... :D :D :D

Happened Mine and took me ages to figure it out. The spring in the handle was gone and not pressing up the lever far enough.
But I broke the spring myself by mistake.

Reason For it breaking was; Two wires coming from the boot were cut where the boot hinges. When these wires were cut the central locking does not open the boot properly and I pulled the lever and broke the spring. Take a look at them wires and check if they are ok.
