Title: Torque Converter failure symptoms
Post by: Gaffers on 27 July 2011, 08:13:02
What are they?

I have some juddering when accelerating from a standstill, unless I drive like Miss Daisy.  I am due to swap the gearbox in the coming weeks but I dont want to go through all that if there is also a problem with the TC.  The gearbox is fubarred anyway, it drops into neutral at around 30mph and then comes back in with a thump.  It might be the gearbox but I want to make sure before I get it in bits.

TIA :y

Sounds more thrust washer than TC
or just fluid?

Nora Batty's apron! That was quick JB!

Fluid is topped up, and I agree it does sound like the thrust washer.  Once I have a spare minute I will put the GB in my garage back together and whack it on the miggy but I would rather make sure the TC is ok first.

Guffer, if its any use to you, I have a mint AR25 complete with TC sitting in my garage that I've just taken off a 2003 2.6, and I don't want alot of money for it either. PM me if you're interested.  :y

I have an AR25 in my garage as well which I am refurbing at the moment following a Thrust Washer failure.  If anything it'd just be the TC but not sure at this stage.

I may wrong on this mate, but I've been told its a good idea to keep the box and TC paired together when dealing with 2nd hand. Also, the boxes fitted to the later cars have a better, smoother gear change. Either way, I'm sure I can help.  :y

Tc itself is so desperately reliable, can't believe it's that

yes - keep them together. Only fit a gearbox if it comes with the tc it was originally paired with.

tc are very reliable, the only moving part is the lock-up clutch, and that only works when you get the speed up in 4th

Mine used to act like that until the fluid was topped up, after that it was fine.
As said, they are best kept paired. The TC is usually totally reliable so I would first get the fluid topped up after cleaning the gearbox filters. You might just probably find that it cures all the problems.
Sounds like you have nothing to lose really, except time. Give it a go...I would. :y
