hi there
Have had my t plate 2.5 v6 auto saloon for about a year and due to the silly costs of fuel have only done about 3k so far. About 4 months ago put sport button on when joining onto mway slip road. got to about 75 and the oil light came on and started making horrible grinding noise. Crawled to nearest garage @ 10mph, put new oil in and within 5 miles oil light off and all back to normal. No problems after but for safety, didnt use sport button again. That was till I got a bit exited at start of holiday and stupidly did the same thing. sport button on on slip rd and up to about 80. this time oil light on and noise but also blue smoke - new engine time i thought. again crawled to next garage, changed oil. Waited an hour and all back to normal. however on rest of journey the light intermiddently came on and with it - horrible noise. That was a month ago now and the car seems to drive fine, pulls ok in all gears but this oil light + noise on at start. If you drive long enough light will go off, noise goes away and all back to normal.
Any ideas anyone??
many thanks

sounds like your oil pickup pipe is blocked / blocking.
id drop the sump and clean it.
And see how it goes, you may have done permanent damage though.

If it's been driven any distance whatsoever with the light on it will have.
Worth checking the oil pressure relief valve is not sticking while you're at it.

thanks for the speedy reply guys.
You know far better than me but u really think I have done perm damage? when it warms up and oil light goes off all is well. normal v6 noise. Have prob done 200-300 miles since the holiday and it hasnt got worse or better
to be fair, if i was deaf I wouldnt know there was a problem....... oh, apart form the oil light being on
you ever heard of the sport button casuing this much havoc b4?
just been out to get lunch and would say it sounds like a diesel if that makes any difference to your answer
i'm resonably handy but when you say "drop the sump" you mean get under it and take the bottom of the engine off? not sure I'm that handy.... :)

its not so much the sport button, as the fact youve driven it hard..
the fact the noise goes offers a little hope I guess, although I think the bottom end will have suffered damage.
yes drop the sump - literally drop the oil, then remove all the bolts holding the oil pan on.
remove and clean the oil pickup pipe - another 3 iirc bolts, clean the surfaces up and refit using some instant gasket on the sump.
This will help oilflow no end, If thats the issue - end of the day its only time and an oil change, no big expense.

Jimbob - your a diamond (although i feel you know i've knackered it and your too nice to say so :-)
I will have a go this w/e - expect to see a new post Monday morning asking how to put bottom of engine back together :)

Running with poor oil pressure certainly won't do it any favours

quick update - incase any of you care!!
this noise must have somat to do with temperature. was very hot here on saturday. went out to buy above items to get dirty on sunday and it kicked out blue smoke for about 20 seconds. Thought it had died before I got chance to ruin it myself but it then settled down. Decided to go for it anyway and by the time I got to the end of the road the oil light was off and the noise gone, it had been taking 15-20 mins b4....... did about 20 miles around town on Saturday all fine. yesterday and today no problems.
Obviously - i'm driving with my fingers crossed but it is all a mystery. It aint worth enough to spend anything on it (£225 off ebay with a years ticket) so gonna keep driving till it dies or fails next MOT.
I think it must be some kind of blockage that cleared itself in the heat or it didnt want me fiddling with it and decided it was better off fixing itself......

As others have advised, its still worth dropping the sump :y
What ever could have blocked it, may have just shifted :)

aye, sump drop just costs the oil - needed anyway and a bit of instant gasket stuff.....could well improve your chances.
Just think very carefully before ever burying your foot in the carpet :y
