It could be as simple as the ATF level is low - check the maint guide index, for a how to on checking.
could be a slight problem with the box, or could be worse.
It could even be nothing and a red herring from another par of the car - such as cam sensor, which can cause a lot of weird issues.
Anything else going on?
Can you get a decent code reader on the car and box? if not, where abouts are you, someone local may be able to help :y

Look in the maintenance section and carry out the pedal trick, it may show you a fault code, which will identify the problem.
Also, if you update your profile with your location, you may have help nearby with a tech 2!!
HTH :y

hi thanks for the help. just checked, its the engine electronics, transmission electronics indicator. you prob realised that.
when it comes on the car goes into limp mode. thats all i can see that goes wrong. as i said though, when i turn the engine off and then back on again its ok. just makes me wonder if they sold it knowing about this fault and got rid of it before it got worse.

As Jimbob stated - check your g/box oil first!!
Then go from there :y

hmmmm
hang on..
a 2002, 2.2 cd, doesnt have a gearbox light - only engine electrics and emissions
a gearbox fault will be indicated via text on the MID display...
I think, therefore, its a normal fault code light, you need the codes reading, Im starting to put money on the cam sensor being a 2.2 :y
