Title: Steering wheel wobble.
Post by: megaomega123 on 22 August 2011, 11:51:43
Have got a steering wheel wobble at 50 mph. I would say it was severe. wobble left to right by about an inch. Also intermittent wobbling under heavy braking.
Front discs are a year and a half old, pads are good. The 50mph wobble is when the steering wheel is set dead centre  :-/

What freecall says, also, were the disc OE or pattern? There are some crappy/cheap discs about that just don't last ......... because they're cheap  ;)

Might be worth swapping wheels round to see if it is still there.

I had more of annoying wheel wobble which was worse under braking. Changed the discs for genuine ones (quite cheap really), it was better but... Changed all the track rod ends (all four!) and the adjuster in between them, the steering tie rod (the big rod that goes between the track rods) and the steering idler and that cured it! Cost a few bob but worth doing.

Like the man says, you really need to have a look see underneath while someone rocks the steering.

in my opinion it isn't the brakes as it would only wobble under braking generally, i would look at wheel balancing first and then go from there usually track rod ends and so forth give a hint when the car doesn't steer straight anymore, although idler could be a suspect

Have the same on mine but only when braking, i'm getting a set of wish bones with poly's done at the moment just have to drill the old rivits out and fit new ball joints and then start a rebuild ( had a nice man push the old bushes out at work for free :)) think i will do the idler and tie rods at the same time with new discs and pads and then off to WIM must free up the adjusters on the back as well.
