Title: Coolant leak.....
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 11 September 2011, 18:48:51
I'm losing abit of coolant.  Not much, I top it up once a month. I'm pretty sure that it's leaking from the thermostat, because when I changed it last year I didn't have new seals so I used the old ones with abit of gunk..... I know... I know.....  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Here's the question tho..... Is it likely to be leaking onto anything and do damage??   :-/  or can it happily wait till the next strip down??  :-/  ::)

One of the most common water leaks is from the Heater Bypass Valve(HBV) which is located at the rear of the engine. Its common description is similar shape to Starship Enterprise from Star Trek.

This may help.......

Thanks Dad!!  :D

That's a good point that I hadn't thought of  :y  I changed the HBV at the same time as the thermostat, but it's worth checking as it's much easier to get at than the thermo!!  :y

Could also be the oils cooler cover plate. mine was leaking a while ago. It appears to be from roughly the same area as the thermostat. Best to whip the plenum off and have a look. :y

Oil cooler plate is sealed with gunk is it not ??  :-? Best arm myself with that and thermo seals then... :(

If I remember rightly if it's the thermo or oil cooler plate, the coolant will run down the V and down the back? Probably not doing much harm in the meantime?  ::)

Yep, gunk. :y Mine ran down the front when it leaked, although my car is usually parked facing downhill. Was like that for a few months, didnt do any harm, just made quite a mess in the valley of the engine which took a lot of cleaning out. ;)
