On a V6 no. The cam belt sit behind the belt cover while the aux belt (which drives the water pump) sits in front of the cam belt cover. I seem to remember it said the the cam belt cover can remain in place when removing the water pump but I'm sure I removed it when I did my water pump.
(obviously all the bag pipes/induction system needs to come off for access. :y

Thank Andy B
So its a job that can be done by a complete novice in a weekend?
:D
-
Yep. :y
-
Should it be a genuine vux water pump or are factored ones ok?
-
if you can afford vauxhall prices then go for it,but i fitted a motor factors one @ about £62 and have had no problems with it :y
-
One final question how long can I run the engine without any water in the system?
:'(

Not very long at all. ie to move your car a few feet You'll bugger your engine if you run it for much longer.
Why do you want/need to run your engine without water/coolant? :-? :-?

I live in a very narrow cul-de-sac and the AA lorry had t drop the car off in a layby at the end of the road

5 mins is about 4.5 mins too long really ::)

There must still be some water left in there :-/ Just top it up with water for the short run. If the aux belt has already come off the pump or broken you'll still be better off with some water in the engine if you're just going to move the car.
-
andy, a quick one, why would my belt suddenly fly off the pullys as i was making a right turn, could it be the tensioner
-
Its about 100 yards only problem is the water seems to come out quicker than I can fill it!!!

Did it come off or shread itself? Could be your power steering pump slowing up when being asked to work hard with a full lock on :-/ :-/ :-/ Was the belt on correctly in the first place? It's very easy to get the polly V belts a groove out between the various pullies.
-
you wont do it any damage in a hundred yards, just take it easy
-
belt is intact andy, just fell off,but it took the caseing with it, cant find that. thats when i noticed the water loss,

That's some leak! :-?
Run your engine for the minimum amount of time that you can. :y

The water pump casing?? Quuite a failure then! :-?
-
going out now to do it, fit new pump and put the belt back on for now and see what happens, cheers andy
-
Be careful getting the three pump bolts out and putting them back in. It is easy to drop them inside the cam cover casing. A bit of grease on the bolt head helps.

Ok can I ash the maybe silly questions now.
I've removed the bagpipes etc and have access to the water pump? Is it simply a case of releaseing the aux belt and then unscrewing the pump remove refit and tighten or do I need to remove other components before moving onto the coolant flush and refill stage?
Again any advice greatly appreciated.
:)

Remove the aux belt pulley from the pump to give more access to its bolts.

Its a bit tight should the plenum come off??

?????
No. Just put a (16mm?) ring spanner on the centre nut of the tensioner for the aux belt. The tensioner is top left looking from front. Then turn it and the whole tensioner swivels and the belt releases enough to pop it off. Perhaps useful to draw where it was routed first.

Thanks Varche
Like I said total novice... Probably should'nt even be trying to do this job LOL.. By the way the Waterpump is the big thing bottom centre isn't it (No I'm not joking)!!!

Better to ask than have a problem. i felt embarrassed asking about how to do the ABS ECU a few years back.
We all started somewhere!! Better doing the job properly yourself than paying mega bucks at a garage.
Couple of other things. When you have the belt off just give the tensioner a quick spin by hand shouldn't sound noisy. They can be removed and repacked with grease. Second thing is if you have a new pump to fit when you have attached the body to the engine, next bit is putting the pulley on. Just check that the bolts don't foul the pump body by turning it by hand. Some pumps do. You will need to either fit shorter bolts or spacers like washersso the bolts don't stick out so much. Happened to me once with a QH pump.

Thanks for the advice.
Just yo make sure the water pump is behind the big pulley bottom centre!
:)

Big pulley right at bottem centre is crank pulley - water pump pulley directly above it - only 3 bolts hold pully on and pulley smooth not grooved
Hope that clarifies :y

I'm off work at the moment if you want a trip to the land of Black Puddings if you need/want a lift with your cam cover(s). :y :y
Never had the need to remove an ABS ECU but will have the tools to remove it. :y :y

I failed miserably ...this was with the old blue 2.5 miggy ... mechanic mate came over and fitted it back on for me... I was getting desperate .. this was the Saturday .. we were due to sail to France for 16 days on the Monday !!! I think that a swear box (if present) would have been full of all my euros !!!
