Title: ABS/TC lights
Post by: albitz on 13 September 2011, 18:34:55
Driving to chavtown on sea today. After 20 miles ABS/TC lights came on, speedo working fine.
On the return journey, same thing after the same miles.
Assume its the beginning of the end for the ABS ECU, although surprised speedo hasnt gone wonky as well. :-/
Not the end of the world as I have an ECU here from a year 2000 2.5 which mine is, so should be a straight swap.

You need to get codes read. ABS ECU failure  generally gives the lack of speedo too, so your problem could be a failed/failing wheel sensor.  :-/ :-/

Good point Andy.I wonder if I disturbed something when I changed the rear shocks/springs last week. ;)

Not always - when the Estate one went initially had abs/tc lights on - with time speedo operation became intermittant then packed up completely as well as loss of speed sensitivity on power steering.

HTH :y

Have had a look around the rear, checked the speed sensors were plugged in etc. All looks ok.
Just used the car and the ABS/TC lights are now on permanently.Speedo and PAS are still working fine so far, although rev counter seems very jerky at low revs - not sure if that could be connected. :-/
Looks like I need to study up on changing ABS ECU. Does the whole pump need to come off, or can the ECU part be changed in situ ?
Tia.

NO!!!! don't take the whole ABS unit off, you'd need a Tech II to cycle the ABS pump to bleed it all if you do.

Yes! apparently - never done one myself  :y

the ECU/Pump is an all in one jobbie, not a job i'd fancy doing, removed one on TB's Goldie, it already had half the engine components stripped out, still pig of a job!

Ive removed a couple myself this year, but that was using a hacksaw on the brake pipes etc. Will be a bit different this time.
Glad to hear the pump doesnt need to come off.
Will have a wander in the guides section and hopefully find some  - giudance. :) :y

Yep, fiddly job. Makes it easier if you can unbolt pump from mounting bracket and carefully bend it up with brakepipes attached to access the lower torx bolts

Cheers Rob. :y
Not planning on doing it today.Hoping to nurse it through until Monday when I will have several days off work, so no need to rush and panic. ;)

I would still get a code reader on it first, just because the sensors look ok doesn't mean they are.If a code reader isn't available use a multi meter on ohms setting and check resistance on each sensor. fronts will give different readings to rear depending on wire length but across each axle readings should be close :y

Got a code reader. Going to plug it in shortly and see what comes up. :y

Cant use the***** code reader. Interface not found. There is a procedure for getting it to work which involves repeatedly pressing F8 while doing something else at the same time. Cant remember the exact procedure.Various people have tried to install the software so it works as it should, but so far without success. :(

After some assistance via PM from a very helpful member, I have got the ***** reader working.
It told me the following.
Code C0045 -(8) Rear right wheel sensor incorrect signal - present.
C0045- (4) unknown DTC>not present.

Looks like it will be worth changing the rear right wheel sensor, before doing anything else. Anyone know if the rear right is right while sitting in the car ? would save the hassle of changing both and the possibility of further complicating the issue. :-/

Edit - theres a bit of oil mist from the diff around that area, might be worth cleaning that up before actually changing the sensor I suppose.

yes, always sat in the car.

If you set it recording live data, and drive a few yards, does it ever provide a signal?

maybe youve not plugged back in / trapped wiring by the diff?

Didnt want to venture into live data, bearing in mind the possibility for it to convert my engine ECU to think its  a diesel engine or similar. :D ;D
Checked the wiring plugs last night, they looked OK but will check them again shortly, then clean the serrated ring (oh err!) then if it isnt cured, swap the sensor for the one from my breaker. It does seem a bit too much of a coincidence that I was working in that area recently.Perhaps I inadvertantly stretched the wire to the sensor.I dont think so, but its possible. :-/

At the risk of stealing AndyB's quote.

The ECU does detach from the pump though. ;)
Anyway, this is probably all your fault.I could still be happily driving around with a broken spring, with working ABS/TC. :P ::) ;D

Actually.. You can unscrew the ECU from the front face of the valve block and leave the valves and pump in the car.

However, IME, once the ECU has failed it doesn't respond via the diag interface at all, so following up the wheel sensor code is a good plan.

Take my spring out, thats clearly the item at fault  ;D  :y

Just quick though, you did't trap/damage sensor/cable when doing the rear springs?  :-/

Did think of that. Inspected everything and no obvious damage.
Cleaned the sensor ring and the face of the sensor - still the same.
Just put a sensor on from my breaker and hey presto - all ok.
Took it for a drive,no lights showing.tested ABS and TC on loose surface. Both working fine. :)
Thanks for all the advice and info everyone.Much appreciated. :y
