Title: Whining Noise - tyres or something else ?
Post by: Rog on 14 September 2011, 16:25:12
Picked up my "new" '52 CDX V6 Estate today. before buying I noticed strange tyres "Sunny" brand, never heard of 'em.

Driving home I was aware of a whining noise, high pitched at speed, lower when slow. No obvious vibration.

Do you think this is car (axle, wheel bearings or something)  or tyres ? Mileage verified with HPI at 53k.

could it have been coming through the stereo? This can happen even with the volume down to zero

High pitched at speed, low pitched when slow, actually goes up and down according to speed.

However, since posting I found this link below !

Hmmm, looks like a complete set of decent new tyres needed soon  ££££   :(

check their dates, if fairly new, you can use for some time..

first time hearing of a tyre brand which is terrible in all aspects, and not a single good review about it..
I guess thats what happens when there aint any actual tests that need to be passed in order to produce a tyre  >:( >:(

are the tyre pressures right. could also be the tyres not worn in yet.

As cem sadi possibly rear differential. Have a quick look underneath the car to see if it is leaking - if it is then you could top up the fluid level to start with (£10ish) or may need to replace the pinnion seal (£20ish)

does the noise get worse when cornering at speed..?

Took it for a run up to the Midlands, 200 mile round trip.

Worse between 30-60mph, almost disappears at 75 and above.

I've almost convinced myself it's the tyres, I hope so as although a new set will cost, its an easy fix.

I had a similar problem and new tyres sorted it

So, new tyres all round it is then.

Any suggestions what ?

My priorities are:

Safe at speed (I drive abroad quite a lot, occasional thrash on an autobahn)
Reliable
Quiet

Not bothered about fancy performance type features. I'm bracing myself for around £400 for the lot.

Sounds like noisy diff. I've had a whine on my estate noticeably between 50 and 70mph since I bought it over 4 years ago and hasn't really got much worse. Fluid levels are fine and doesn't effect performance in any way - got used to it now.  ::)

I've just had a pair of these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-NEUTON-235-45-17-TYRES-97W-2354517-235-45-17-PAIR-/220847838342?pt=UK_Cars_Tyres_RL&hash=item336b8e9486) fitted to the rear as I'm looking to change the suspension and didn't want expensive tyres while they're likely to get scrubbed out. I normally use something else but couldn't get them at the short notice I had so decided to give them a go.

So far, seem pretty good. Ideally need to move them to the front to get a braking test on them :y

I put Kuhmo on and they seem good to me about the right price

To be honest, I'm probably going to stick with the big name premium brands, Pirrelli, Avon, Michelin etc. What I had on my previous Omega were fine, I think they were Avon, I'll ask my garage.

I'm now trying to decide when. I'm driving to Holland next Friday, do I do it before or take a chance ? Probably chance it.

Now, that's a thought. I'll take a look in morning.

i had the same problem on my 2.6 estate, i swopped the wheels over from my 2.2 estate and now the 2.6 is fine but the 2.2 whines so i would say put your hand in your pocket and purchase some decent tyres, especially if your driving at high speeds

Well, took it off abroad for a few days, no probs, but noise got louder on the way back with a car load of beer & plonk  :D

Not a big deal, but this one doesn't seem to have as much "poke" as my old one, exactly same spec engine as far as I know.

why has nobody mentioned wheel bearings ? i had the exact same problem and tried everything including changing the tyre and it was when doing this i was told the bearing had gone...it had fused together so did not pick up on the " wobble " test,so worth checking

Take it from me its those flaming sunny tyres that are the culprit, I had them on the front of mine & they drove me mad >:(, As soon as i changed them I finally got peace from the infernal racket produced by those Chinese pieces of excrement. :y

Did occur to me, but I took the risk of a 600 mile trip and figured that if it was bearings then something bad would happen, but it didn't. Yes, I have European breakdown cover !
