Title: Trouble with starter motor
Post by: KooPa on 17 September 2011, 07:17:07
I got a '94 Omega 2.5 TD auto.
The starter spins but it does not engage the flywheel most of the time.
So I picked the starter motor out to see what's wrong.
When the starter motor was outside the car it worked every time, and I see that the gears move all the way out. The only thing I noticed was the axle was a little slack, not much.
The starter motor is the type with the reduction gear.

I greased the axle as I thought it could be that the gears did not go smooth on the axle, but it did not work.

The starter eventually works, but it requires a lot (often 50+) turns by the key.

I did not open the starter motor, as it seemed OK, but if I take out the starter motor again, what should I look for when I open it?

would get another one by the time you found what wrong with it, they do go, pins get bent springs wear out cog wears down just swap it for new or one that works can pick them up easy for few quids..

starter is a critical component, not worth taking any risk, go for an untouched one or a new imo..

Thanks for the reply's.
I live in Norway, and here a new (refurbished I think) costs £450. That's a bit over our budget at the moment.

I checked the rockauto webshop and there I can get one for £220 with shipment and taxes, so I'll guess I order one from there.
