"sounds" similar to Mr Lovejoys issue. Does it give a single knock on start up?
Can't be two issues the same surely?

No Chris totally different noise...
If you start the car you get a noise, almost like a dry bearing crossed with rattling of two metal surfaces touching.... If you apply the handbrake, put the car into a gear it becomes alot louder.... If you then put your foot on the accelolater to pull off the noise vanishes leaving the engine sounding lovely and quiet. The light beat us the other night but it sounds sort of the torque convertor position but drivers side... Need to get under and have a look.

update: had a look just now and think heat shield around exhaust manifold on drivers side, moved it slightly when cold and not as much noise now and quieter when in gear , tomorrow will tell i hope.

.....I drive four pot but have the same issue. And the rattle stops when presing the brake pedal even just a little. Checked heat shields and breakes - nothing found so I'm confused :-/
