Been out messing with the rear seats (well removed the bench seat) to retrieve my sons money that my daughter had 'posted' through the seat belt holes in the bench...... all really simple and easy, put it all back and started the car to goto shops and the airbag light has appeared constantly :-[ when I turn ignition on, the light goes out, then when engine starts, the light comes back on. It wasnt on this morning when I popped out on school run - did I do something, I didnt notice any wires apart from the heated seat plugs?
-
Hmm, looks like after reading some posts I need tech2 to reset it - it can wait cos im completly skint from fixing other things on it, what could I have disturbed in the back to upset it though...... as much as I love the car and want to keep it, im waring thin on patience and money.. it just never seems to want to be fixed and the MOT expires in 2 weeks, sorted almost everything for that but now this bloody thing has come up >:(
-
There's nothing on the rear seats that could upset the airbag system, it's likely you've caught/kicked a wire/plug for the front seats airbag sytem. It could also be the pre-tensioners in the front seat belt retainers. Thing is that even if you find the fault without a (cheapo/)TechII you'll still need one to reset the system.

:-[ i'll check the plugs wires near front seats..... been looking at the cheapo tech2 stuff on ebay, even as cheap as they are, at the moment I cant afford to buy one :-[ Anybody got a cheapo (no offence) tech2 that they wouldnt mind lending me via post, i'd take great care and return it same day. My wife will murder me if I tell her theres another fault :'(
-
Found what could have been the problem, on the passenger side front seat, under the plastic cover on floor near sill, there is the seat electrics, with a small green 2 pin plug with bright yellow casing - well the wires had come out and may have earthed - I think this could be for the side airbag if it was connected, wires shoved back in and secured.....

....
My wife will murder me if I tell her theres another fault :'(
Take the lamp out ans stay schtum! ::)

You'll have to sort it for the mot - its a failure if light doesn't come on with ignition, and go back out after.

You sure? ;) My diseasal Astra shed had its airbag light for the duration of the MOT. ::)

Pretty certain.... ...the online checklists are a bit vague.

Arghhh dont remind me of the mot ;D im going crazy here, been thinking at a desperate push, to buy a cheapo tech2 on ebay, then re-list it when im finished, but means digging into unauthorised overdraft and incurring charges :'( :'( :'( at this moment, I dont think i've ever hated a car so much in my life :-[

If you look here (http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm) the closest I could find is the bit about seatbelt pretensioner flags
In itself a seat belt that has had the pre-tensioner activated is NOT a reason for rejection.

I suppose being a safety critical thing, I should get it sorted asap rather than try and fool myself and the mot tester....... i'd even bring it up to see TB but the car has a tank of fuel and its gotta last me 2 weeks (very doubtful)
The car has dug a big hole, dumped me in it, and now its trying to bury me alive ::) If it fails its test im gonna break it, see how the car like being ripped to shreds :D

Got my cheappo tech2 this morning, plugged it into the wifes old laptop serial port, and the fault said 'Front passenger seat airbag actuation' This would probably be due to the little plug under the seat - the plug had come off somehow and wires were hanging naked and I presume earthed together - lucky my seats dont have airbags or I imagine the bag would have deployed, but the cheapo tech2 reset it perfectly.
On the plus side aswell, I checked the engine for codes, and 'code 57 - code unknown' came up but reset fine, took it out for a 30 mile drive and checked again, but not a single fault now :y Not bad for £30 im well happy with it, and the software is english :) It doesnt have the ability to check solenoid operation or engine temp etc, but it does tell you the faults in text rather than numbers - I unplugged the EGR while it was running and it immediatly came up with 'EGR fail'. So for just clearing warning lights and finding faults, its a diamond :y

Strange that it picked this code up, I havent seen an eml light for about a month, but on paperclip test back then, it didnt show any codes :-/ i'll keep my eye on it tho - cheers TB

Might be old. Once 'timed out' some codes remain in ECU, but not flashed out with paperclip...

Hi Guys my best mate - who's just passed away with cancer - was an MOT tester actually right upto 2 weeks before he died, SRS light is not an MOT failure NOR do you have to keep your airbags you can put a wood steering wheel or anything on with no probs - how do you think they'd get round a front baby seat when you turn off that airbag? BUT ABS light is on the test bulb must light up and then go out exactly as the individual maker set it up - if you look on the wall in your test station it actually has bulb time IN SECONDS on a chart. The powers that be love us don't they. As a little side point I've been looking through my '97 autodata book and many cars actually list a higher CO content than there allowed on test - how the hell does VOSA get away with that? Anything else is a case of "if fitted it must work" but remember the tester is not allowed to take things apart - for instance if you don't have a spare wheel or it's illegal take it out and fill your boot with tool box's they don't take em out or chuck the spare and carry a can of tyre inflater - it's perfectly legal and MOT proof PLUS it makes a good place to hide your porn - who's missus ever looks in the spare wheel well. ;)
