i removed the speedo ass to route a wire behind it, when i put it back together and turned the ignition on no mid display.retraced my steps and found that i hadnt plugged the connector in properly, fixed that but still no display what have i broken?

Blown the bulbs????? :-/

Its not beyond the realms of possibility that you've blown all 4 bulbs - when old they do seem to go when messing with the MID.
If you have knackered the MID, if yours is a post 98 model (single grey connector), I may have a spare...

well ill be gobsmacked all the bulbs are blown, i thought the pair of you were having a laugh but three bulbs later all is well

I had the same thing happen to mine one day ok then I thought that the MID had packed up but just bulbs gone in it too. But if you think about it these bulbs are on all the time the car is running so they are on a fair bit ;)

strange but true. the climate unit is the same - remove that and expect all bulbs to blow....

i replaced my dash bulbs with a nice set of white LEDs.
