Post by: Martin_1962 on 11 January 2008, 18:03:57
Does anyone know anything about MacAudio or SPLX in car amplifiers, or Blaupunkt?

Thanks

Splx = Nasty cheap garish chav amp. Big claims and low quality (and price). Not recommended.

MacAudio = Slightly better than Splx. Again, not recommended.

Blaupunkt = Better.

If you are looking to run a set of Infinity 605's (up front I presume) then I would suggest a 2 channel amp producing around 30-40w rms.
You don't need more than that.

I would also recommend a small sub to get the best out of the system.

Here are some recommended amps going cheap.

I was quite impressed with the amp design of the Kenwood KAC unit I fixed for Mr Laidback.....

I had a pair of Kenwood amps (about 25W RMS per channel, so not big power, but plenty) back when I used to do such things.  While I make no comments on their design (never took them apart), they sounded great. And still do - I fitted the system (Kenwood HU, 2 amps, 10 disc changer, all from around 1992) in Mrs TheBoy's dads Rover a couple of years back...

If it is free, then I would have the Blaupunkt... no guarantees it will work though.

All the amps I have suggested will be very cheap (under £25 I expect) and will drive the Infinity speakers quite nicely.

Blaupunkt is quite good - looking at pairing two channels

I would presume that it is a 4 channel amp then. Make sure it can be bridged.

Macaudio if not good enough would be yours

I'll test bridging the BP

Freecycle is a good way of getting rid of unsellable stuff - eg old potties, and getting otther peoples old stuff - like wood for rabbit hutches

I can recommend the Alpine amps listed. Got a broken MRV-F407 for 20 quid off ebay and changed the MOSFETs in one of the ouptut stages. It's a great amp. :y

I have the Alpines big brother in my Omega as a replacement to the bose amp.....

Lovely amp, coupled with the standard Bose speakers really improves the system, my only critisism is that the standard vaux unit does not have pre-outs...

i read it with great interest, and really wanted to have a go, however i am not that deft with soldering so decided not to persue it.

My CCR2006 is on its last legs and i am now looking for another one to replace, if i can get one at the right price i might pluck up the courage
