Ok so the guy who previously owned the estate I have cut the wiring out to put in an aftermarket stereo...finally got round to wiring an original connector plug back in today...so black wire to black wire, yellow to yellow, black to black and so on...so I have 2 red wires to 2 red wires...easy enough, if you do it one way round you have power, the other way you dont...2 blue wires, again can only be one way around...
Left with 5 brown and white wires to 5 brown and white wires...now one a speaker wire, easy enough try it till the speaker works...
So got 4 left and when the radio is turned on the date line disappears...presumably in theory to be replaced by the radio info that isnt coming up due to wrong wiring???
So are the brown and white wires potentially being connected wrong and lack of display when radio is on connected do you think...or have I maybe wired something else up wrong??
On the bottom of the stereo there is a wiring diagram for the pins, but not sure what they all mean as mostly 2 character shortened info...
Any help much appreciated :)

So why dont I have any display in the radio bit when the radio is on?? Stereo from a 99 CD and car is a 98 S Tourer so should be compatible :)

Check that the stereo is correctly configured between 8 and 10 digit displays - switch on holding 2 & 4

Well yes, but it's lasted over 5 years already and for the price they cost, it's a risk i'm willing to take. Was just answering chris's question honestly!

The brown/white wires are for:
Display Comms
DIag (tech 2)
So connections are as follows:
Radio MID
pin 17 pin 9
pin 18 pin 10
pin 22 pin 11
and
Radio Diag
pin 19 pin 7

So basically when the brown and white wires are wired correctly then the MID should display the radio station etc? Good stuff will get there in the end then :) Thanks for the info :) Will take some guess work...messing about till it works though...as the wires were cut to put in an aftermarket stereo so will just have the swap the brown and white wires about till the MID works lol Cheers, Chris.

Buzz them out to the MID and diag socket with a meter.....
