What is the protocol for the inter-ECU communication?
Are all signals discrete wires? Are they active high (12V = bad) or active low (gnd = bad)? And what if the signal is O/C?

varies on ecu and car age. some are simple on/off, some coded, some are CAN

Fair enough.
In my case, I'm dealing at a 1995 Omega diesel 2.5 CDX with an auto 'box.
Isn't that a bit early for CAN bus?
And following from the plethora of other questions I've raised, I'm wondering if I can stop the engine ECU from knowing that the Gearbox ECU is declaring a fault, or if they are too tightly integrated to do something as simple as pulling a connector.
