Title: Try to repair old unit or buy new one.
Post by: Omegadoha, Desert Member on 21 August 2008, 18:29:40
My existing Phillips CCRT 2008 unit is currently in the shop for repairs.

But at the same time I am now wondering whether to just get a new unit. There are some wonderful units that appear to have everything, DVD, MP3, Bluetooth, MP4 etc etc. Only snag is the manufacturer is unheard of like Clarion or Rockmars. These come with a 3 month warranty but are they any good?

If I go for one of these, there will be the loss of steering wheel controls and display. Also it might look a bit shite due to the gap around the perimeter of the unit. Cost including fitting here is about GBP 225.00

Any thoughts.

I always thought of Clarion as a really good make :/
Never had any of there stuff but not heard bad things.
The line up looks quite good toohttp://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product_list.php?filter_manufacturer_id=24

Although i have always prefered Alpine Stuff :)

You can get adaptors for most of the popular makes (sony, clarion, alpine, jvc, pioneer etc) that will allow you to keep the steering wheel controls. Also some of them also do the Display too.

Never heard of that other make you suggested tho, would steer clear of unbranded gear, dont really know what your buying and 99% it wont be compatable with There steering OR display

I was just about to comment on how expensive Alpine Audio was is.

Then when I went and had a look at the link I was actually quite surprised.   :y :y

In both my personal and professional opinion, Clarion is without any doubt, the best brand you could possibly purchase.

Yes, its more expensive, but the quality of the high end stuff is unbelievable. technically, they cannot be beaten.

Many will compare to Alpine, which has the greater market awareness, and is often shagged out via the internet discount stores, but when you look at the sound off circuits, and the guys that are using steros to compete for big money prizes, the winners are nearly always Clarion.

Must admit that when I bought my Sylvia Turbo it came as standard with Clarion Stereo equipment in it.  I was mega impressed with sound and the quality of it.

I had just come from a Pioneer component unit which cost me a fair packet

So hands up to Clarion and that was in 1985 :y :y
